Backpacking India 62/129: Indian Shave - Shaving and Facial Massage in Sikkim, India
I, mr.hotsia, backpacked to the state of Sikkim, a small paradise in northern India where nature remains pure and local culture is truly vibrant. This trip was not just about viewing the Himalayan mountains or visiting Namchi town, but also about experiencing something rare elsewhere: authentic Indian-style shaving and facial massage in Sikkim.
After traveling from Gangtok, the capital city of Sikkim, via the main road connecting to Siliguri in West Bengal, this journey was full of challenges and the beauty of mountain routes. The local jeep I took to Namchi town allowed me to closely observe the lifestyle of the people here. Namchi, meaning “high sky,” is located over 1,600 meters above sea level. The cool atmosphere and the locals’ conversations mixing local languages with English and Hindi made me feel like I had stepped into another world.
One thing I want to share is the Indian Shave experience—shaving combined with facial massage—that I tried at the Namchi market. The small roadside barbershop was warm and friendly. The barber not only used traditional razors but also incorporated facial massage techniques to stimulate blood circulation surprisingly well. This massage not only refreshed my face but also relieved travel fatigue excellently.
mr.hotsia feels this experience is more than beauty care; it is a deep cultural encounter with the Sikkimese people who care about natural health and beauty, clearly different from using modern tools in big cities.
Afterward, I explored the Namchi market, the town’s center. Here you can find a variety of local foods blending Nepali and Hindu cuisines perfectly. I tried Pelling-style fried rice while listening to Nepali songs from a street singer, creating an incredibly warm and lively atmosphere.Namchi Town, South Sikkim, IndiaA place mr.hotsia highly recommends everyone to experience.
For traveling in Sikkim, local jeeps are the main transport that helped me move conveniently between points, whether from Gangtok to Namchi or from Namchi to Pelling, where you can enjoy close-up views of the Himalayas and the majestic Kangchenjunga peak.Dahlap Homestay, Pelling Town, West Sikkim, IndiaandPelling Town, West Sikkim, Indiaare other destinations mr.hotsia will share in future stories.
During my visit, some roads were still under repair, but the people here contributed to a very friendly and warm atmosphere. Talking with locals and eating local food made me truly understand the lifestyle and culture of Sikkim.
Besides the facial massage I tried, Sikkim offers many attractions: pristine nature, diverse arts and culture, and genuinely welcoming people. For anyone seeking a unique journey and new experiences, Sikkim is the answer mr.hotsia wants you to discover yourself.
