Backpacking India 75/129: Exciting trip in Pelling, Sikkim, India with a one-day trip to Khecheopalri Lake

Hello, I am mr.hotsia. Today, I will take everyone to get to know a small town hidden in the Himalayas of Sikkim state, India, which isPellingA quiet town full of natural charm and diverse culture. At about 2,150 meters above sea level, Pelling is a destination for travelers wanting to escape the hustle of big cities, enjoy cool weather, and see the Himalayas up close.

Before arriving in Pelling, I traveled from Gangtok, the capital city of Sikkim, connected by highway 31A, which is passable in all weather conditions. This journey made me clearly feel the changes in landscape and the blend of Tibetan and Nepali cultures. (Read more aboutTraveling to Gangtok, Sikkim, India)

Pelling with the purity of nature and tranquility in West Sikkim

Pelling is located just 10 kilometers from the Geyzing district office. Regular buses connect these two towns. Though small, the atmosphere here is simple with a Buddhist lifestyle mixed with Nepali and Sikkimese languages. I met friendly and smiling people here.

What impressed me most was the abundance of nature around the town, still pure like an untouched land by heavy development. When I visited in winter, temperatures dropped low enough for snow to cover some areas, making the scenery beautifully white.

One-day trip: Journey to the sacred Khecheopalri Lake

One of the must-visit destinations when in Pelling isKhecheopalri Lakealso known by locals as the "Sacred Lake" of Sikkim. This lake is located not far from Pelling town and is a sacred site where people of various ethnicities come to worship and make wishes.

Early that morning, I took a jeep from Pelling to the lake, which took less than 30 minutes. The road was still steep and winding, but the scenery along the way made me hardly feel tired. I saw small simple villages and green meadows covered with light mist.

Upon arriving at Khecheopalri Lake, I felt the peacefulness permeating every inch of this place. The clear lake water reflected the Himalayas and large surrounding trees. The atmosphere seemed filled with positive energy that calmed the mind incredibly.

Locals and tourists walked counterclockwise around the lake, chanting prayers and lighting incense and candles. I also brought flowers and incense to place as a wish according to local beliefs, which was the most valuable experience of this trip.

Experience local lifestyle and food in Pelling and nearby towns

After visiting the lake, I returned to Pelling and strolled through the local market, full of souvenir shops and local food stalls. I triedMomoNepali-style dumplings freshly fried, with a unique, rich, and fragrant spice flavor.

Additionally, I tasted Nepali tea brewed traditionally by locals, sweet and creamy, perfect for the cold mountain weather.

Travel and tips for those wanting to visit Pelling

For those planning to go to Pelling, I recommend traveling from Gangtok by jeep, which is the most convenient and safest way, taking about 3-4 hours depending on road and weather conditions.

The nearest airport is Bagdogra Airport in Siliguri city, from where you must take a car to Gangtok, and from Gangtok, there are vehicles to Pelling. I have shared this in the articleBackpacking Sikkim, Indiawhich contains detailed travel information and useful tips.

In Pelling, there are several homestays and small hotels to choose from. But if you like a homely atmosphere close to nature, staying with local families offers a different and memorable experience.
