Backpacking India 78/129: Sipping Unepali liquor at Darap Village, Tumba Subdistrict, Sikkim, India
For those who love backpacking and want to experience the true lifestyle of the Nepali people in Sikkim, India, my story this time will take you to Darap Village, Tumba Subdistrict, located in the state of Sikkim, a small land between the Himalayas with unique charm and diverse tribal cultures.
I traveled from Gangtok, the capital city of Sikkim, by shared jeep through winding roads filled with breathtaking mountain views. The distance is about 78 kilometers from Gangtok to Namchi, the main town of South Sikkim. Then I took another vehicle to Darap Village, which is not far away. Traveling in Sikkim mostly involves shared jeeps, a local experience not to be missed as it reveals the real life of the people and the abundant nature.Traveling to Gangtok City, Sikkim, Indiais a great starting point for travelers who want to open their experience in this region.
Atmosphere and lifestyle in Darap Village
Darap Village is a Nepali community that still firmly preserves its traditional way of life. The houses here are built from wood and stone, with small vegetable gardens and terraced fields growing cold-weather crops amidst the cool Himalayan climate. I strolled through the village and noticed locals wearing traditional handwoven clothes. They smiled warmly and greeted me kindly.
One thing that impressed me was trying the homemade Unepali liquor made by the villagers. This fermented fruit and rice liquor has a smooth taste and a unique aroma, like a drink of warmth and friendship passed around the community. I, Mr.Hotsia, sat chatting and exchanging stories with the locals, listening to live Nepali folk songs played by the fire at night. It was a happiness hard to find elsewhere.
Travel and relaxation in South Sikkim
From Darap Village, I continued to Namchi, the center of South Sikkim, located over 1,600 meters above sea level. Namchi has a peaceful atmosphere and beautiful viewpoints such as Central Park, a public park in the city center. Here, I stayed at a small comfortable hotel near the local market, where I tasted various local dishes like mo:mo (Nepali dumplings with various fillings) and spicy curry.
Traveling in Sikkim requires some patience because the roads are still mountainous and winding, with some sections under repair. But I, Mr.Hotsia, see this as part of the fun and challenge that makes this trip more meaningful.Namchi City, South Sikkim, Indiais a good stopover for travelers who want to truly experience local life.
The unique charm of Sikkim
Sikkim is a state with distinctive culture and enchanting nature. From Gangtok, the state capital, to small villages like Darap and the town of Namchi, every place has its own stories and community colors. Most Sikkim residents are Nepali and Lepcha people, with diverse traditions and languages. Walking through these villages allowed me, Mr.Hotsia, to learn and experience a simple yet profound way of life.
Besides traveling by the unique shared jeep, I also witnessed the locals' efforts to preserve nature and local culture well, such as traditional homestays that welcome tourists to stay and learn the real lifestyle.Dahlap Homestay, Pelling City, West Sikkim, Indiais a good example of eco-tourism that I, Mr.Hotsia, recommend you try experiencing yourself.
