Backpacking India 82/129: Pelling to Demtam Sikkim Journey to Demtam Town, Sikkim, India
Traveling from Pelling to Demtam in Sikkim, India, is an experience that mr.hotsia must say is special and different from the usual routes tourists often take. For me, backpacking in Sikkim this time was filled with excitement and a genuine desire to explore the local way of life.
Pelling is located in West Sikkim at an altitude of over 2,150 meters. This small, peaceful town is full of charm with a perfect blend of Tibetan-Nepali culture and nature. mr.hotsia has previously described the atmosphere and journey inDahlap Homestay, PellingHere, the weather is cool and fresh all year round. The Himalayas stretch out with breathtaking views.
When I left Pelling by shared jeep, the main mode of transport in Sikkim, everything seemed simple and friendly. The driver was skilled on the winding mountain roads, some parts steep and narrow. Along the way, small villages scattered along the hillsides could be seen. Most locals still live by farming, growing native vegetables and raising animals. They mostly speak Sikkimese and other local languages but greet warmly with smiles.
Demtam is a small town in South Sikkim, located on a plateau at an average altitude of about 1,600 meters above sea level. It is considered the administrative and commercial center of the area. I have written about Namchi town, which is not far away, in an articleNamchi Town, South Sikkim, IndiaThis place is becoming more known to tourists as a starting point for pilgrimages and trekking in South Sikkim.
Upon arriving in Demtam, the first thing mr.hotsia noticed was the simplicity of daily life. Most locals still live traditionally. There is a small market selling fresh produce and daily necessities. This market is a meeting point and a place for community news exchange. I stopped to try local food like momos (Tibetan-style fried or baked dumplings) and fragrant butter tea, which warmed me in the cold weather.
For traveling around Sikkim, mr.hotsia recommends using shared jeeps or buses that conveniently connect various towns, such as from Pelling to Namchi or onward to Gangtok, the center of Sikkim, which is linked to other places in India by highways and helicopter services (read more aboutTraveling to Gangtok, Sikkim)
The route from Pelling to Demtam is not just a journey to change locations, but mr.hotsia feels it is a journey into a world different from the big cities he has seen. Life here still preserves naturalness and traditional culture. Although roads and facilities have improved, the first impression is the friendliness and peace that are rare nowadays.
In the evening at Demtam, I had the chance to stroll around the village, chat with locals at the small homestay where I stayed, and listen to live Nepali songs from a street singer (if interested in this atmosphere, try watchingPelling Fried Rice, a Nepali song from a street singer in Sikkim). Seeing the real life of the people here made me love Sikkim even more.
For anyone planning to visit Sikkim, I recommend trying the journey from Pelling to Demtam at least once. Besides enjoying the beautiful Himalayan mountain views, you will experience the true lifestyle of the locals here.
