Backpacking India 88/129: New Rice Ghost Festival in Sikkim, India at Namchi Homestay, SIKKIM

Hello, I am mr.hotsia, back with stories from backpacking in Sikkim once again. This time I had the chance to experience something extraordinary in Namchi, located in South Sikkim, India. The New Rice Ghost Festival, locally called “New Rice Ghost Festival of Sikkim,” is a traditional ceremony showing respect to the spirit of the newly harvested rice. It is an important community event that I had the opportunity to join while staying with a local family in a small homestay amidst the peaceful nature and ancient culture of Namchi.

Namchi: A High Town Full of Stories

Namchi, which means “High Sky” in the local language, is situated at about 1,675 meters above sea level. The town is the center of South Sikkim, about 78 kilometers from Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim state. I have previously shared my travel story to Gangtok.(Read more details)Traveling to Namchi from Gangtok is convenient by jeep buses connecting various towns in Sikkim. Traveling through these steep mountainous areas gave me a clear view of lifestyles and landscapes very different from other parts of India.

Namchi itself has a population of about 12,000 people, but its cultural and religious diversity is remarkable. Hindus and Buddhists live harmoniously here, and daily languages include Sikkimese, Nepali, Hindi, and English. It is a peaceful and warm town, perfect for travelers wanting to escape the hustle and bustle and learn about local community life.

New Rice Ghost Festival: A Tradition Preserved with Heart

The New Rice Ghost Festival in Sikkim is a tradition I have never seen anywhere else. Participating felt like stepping back in time to an era when people were deeply connected to nature. The ceremony begins with offering the newly harvested rice from the past season to the spirit of the rice, asking for blessings for a bountiful harvest in the coming year.

I stayed at a homestay in central Namchi. The host was very kind and eager to share detailed stories about this tradition. Locals prepare traditional dishes made from new rice and local ingredients such as sticky rice mixed with beans, sweet potatoes, and various native vegetables, served with hot herbal tea from the mountains.

The festival atmosphere was filled with music and folk dances that naturally drew me in. Local musicians and singers played traditional instruments and sang Nepali songs with warm and profound melodies. For those interested in Sikkimese folk music, I recommend listening to “Piring Fried Rice,” a Nepali song by a street singer in Sikkim that I recorded.Click here to watch

Homestays in Namchi: Rest Your Heart Close to Nature and People

Staying in a homestay in Namchi is an experience I highly recommend for those wanting to experience the real life of Sikkimese people. There is no luxury like big hotels, but it is full of warmth and sincerity from the hosts, who are ready to share local stories and recommend the town’s food with genuine care.

If you want to know more about Namchi, I have written about homestays in Namchi. Feel free to read it atHomestay with Locals, Namchi Town, South Sikkim, IndiaAnd if you are interested in full food experiences, I also have an in-depth article hereFood in Namchi Town, South Sikkim, IndiaIt’s another aspect I want you to try at least once

Continuing the Journey to Pelling and Other Towns in Sikkim

After spending ample time in Namchi, I traveled on to Pelling, located in western Sikkim. It is another favorite town of mine. At over 2,000 meters elevation, you can clearly see the Himalayas and Kanchenjunga peak. Most travel in Sikkim uses jeep buses connecting towns like Gangtok, Namchi, Pelling, and Jorethang.

If you are interested in Pelling’s story, I have written an article herePelling Town, West Sikkim, IndiaAnd if you like homestays too, check outDahlap Homestay, Pelling Town, West Sikkim, Indiawhich offers a different perspective of western Sikkimese life.

Summary of Impressions from the New Rice Ghost Festival in Namchi

Joining the New Rice Ghost Festival in Namchi gave me a deep understanding of the relationship between people and nature in Sikkim, the generosity of the locals, the meaningful simplicity, and an atmosphere that made me feel like I was coming home again in a foreign land.

For those wanting to experience Sikkim deeply, I recommend planning a trip to Namchi and staying at a homestay here. Don’t forget to prepare your heart to embrace new experiences that are both challenging and warmly welcoming.
