Backpacking India 89/129: Enjoying Spicy Round Chili Chicken Curry in Sikkim Chicken Curry SIKKIM
Hello dear readers, today mr.hotsia will take you deep into the experience of eating round chili chicken curry in Sikkim, a small state in northern India. This place is not only famous for the magnificent Himalayan mountain scenery but also for its local cuisine that is flavorful and excellent as an appetizer, especially the round chili chicken curry that I have tasted and must share.
Before diving into the food, let me share a bit about the travel atmosphere. Sikkim is connected to India via Highway 31A, linking the capital Gangtok with Siliguri city in West Bengal state, about 114 kilometers apart. For me, mr.hotsia, the journey started from Darjeeling, passing winding roads and beautiful mountain views before reaching Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim. I stayed in Gangtok for two nights before taking a shared jeep to Namchi and then to Pelling, which was the main destination of this trip.Read more about traveling to Gangtok
Namchi is an important town in South Sikkim, situated at an average altitude of about 1,675 meters above sea level. The surrounding atmosphere is peaceful, and most people are Hindu and Buddhist, primarily speaking Nepali. Transportation in Namchi and Sikkim mostly uses shared jeeps. For me, experiencing the local lifestyle here is a golden opportunity.Read about Namchi townAnd I also tried some unique local dishes
Sikkim Round Chili Chicken Curry – A Flavor You Must Try
Round Chili Chicken Curry (Chicken Curry Sikkim) is a dish I first encountered in a small market in Namchi. The curry stands out with the richness of local spices that are unique. The round chili used is spicy but not overwhelmingly hot. The aroma of herbs and spices added makes the curry deeply flavorful and captivating.
This dish is usually served with hot steamed rice or sticky rice, which locals in Sikkim prefer. Sometimes I saw it paired with soft, chewy roti bread. Round chili chicken curry is a signature dish that provides warmth on cold days in the Himalayan mountains.
I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to eat with locals in a small local restaurant in Namchi. This atmosphere made me feel truly part of the community. The people here are friendly and happy to share stories about their food and culture. I learned that the round chili used is native to Sikkim, grown and harvested locally only, which gives the curry its very distinctive taste.
Lifestyle and Markets in Sikkim
Besides food, the markets in Namchi and Pelling are full of daily life colors. I, mr.hotsia, enjoy strolling through local markets to see fresh vegetables, fruits, and spices that locals bring to sell. Choosing ingredients here helps understand that the food eaten is fresh and closely connected to the surrounding nature.
The market in Pelling, not far from Namchi, consists of local shops and homestays serving tourists who want to experience authentic village atmosphere.Read about homestays in PellingI stayed at a homestay run by a kind family who cooked warm local food. One of my favorite dishes was this round chili chicken curry.
Traveling in Sikkim and Route Recommendations
For travelers interested in tasting round chili chicken curry and exploring Sikkim, I recommend starting in Gangtok and then taking shared jeeps to Namchi and Pelling. Traveling by jeep is convenient and offers an adventurous travel vibe, very much in the style of mr.hotsia. The nearest airport connection is Bagdogra Airport in Siliguri, from where you can easily continue by road to Sikkim.Read about backpacking in Sikkim
On this trip, I spent two nights in Gangtok, then took a jeep to Namchi and onward to Pelling before returning to Siliguri. Travel time on mountain roads can be a bit slow due to curves and road conditions still under improvement, but the trade-off with Himalayan views and local culture is definitely worth it.
Summary of Experience from mr.hotsia
Sikkim Round Chili Chicken Curry is not just an ordinary dish but a representation of the culture and lifestyle of the people in Sikkim. This dish reflects local identity through its ingredients and traditional cooking methods passed down through generations. I, mr.hotsia, encourage everyone who has the chance to visit Sikkim to try this dish at least once. I guarantee the spiciness and aroma of the spices will leave a lasting impression.
