Pering fried rice with Nepali songs from a street singer in Sikkim, India

If you are a travel fan who loves real experiences and the true local cultural atmosphere, you must not miss visiting Sikkim, a small state in northern India, where I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to experience both a full stomach and a full heart at the same time with a simple dish called “Pering Fried Rice” served alongside beautiful Nepali songs from a street singer in Pelling, West Sikkim.

Pelling is a small town located over 2,000 meters above sea level amidst the majestic Himalayas. I traveled from Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, via National Highway 31A which connects to other parts of India. The route between these towns is filled with natural views and cool weather all year round. (Read more aboutTravel to Gangtok, Sikkim, India)

In Pelling, I chose to stay at a small homestay owned by a kind local family. While enjoying hot, richly flavored fried rice made from fresh local ingredients, I heard sweet Nepali songs drifting from a street singer nearby. She sang with a soulful spirit conveyed through every word. Her voice was smooth and charming like no other, creating a feeling of truly immersing in the authentic culture of Sikkim.

Pering Fried Rice: A Taste Infused with Local Essence

The Pering fried rice I tasted was cooked with local spices, fresh vegetables from the backyard garden, and meat or eggs sourced from nearby communities. The flavor was not as spicy as South or Central Indian food I had tried before but was instead mellow and complex in the Himalayan style, with just the right amount of spices and the fragrant aroma of local herbs like coriander and ginger.

In the local market of Pelling where I walked through, vendors set up stalls selling various cooking ingredients including fresh vegetables, fruits, and meat. Along narrow alleys, local singers and musicians performed live with traditional instruments. The Nepali songs they sang represent the spirit of the people of Sikkim who still preserve their long-standing culture and language.

Street Music and a Culture Still Vibrant

I clearly remember one evening while eating fried rice, a female singer sat not far away. She sang Nepali songs with a deep, emotional voice. Her songs conveyed stories of life, love, and the nature of this region vividly. I approached her and learned she is a street singer who earns a living through her music and selling Pering fried rice at the same time.

This singer told me that the songs she sings have been passed down from previous generations and remain an important part of the Sikkimese way of life. Nepali songs blended with Tibetan and Indian cultures act as a bridge connecting the past and present, still alive in the street music.

Traveling in Sikkim and Discovering Pelling

For those interested in following my footsteps, traveling in Sikkim is fairly convenient by using local jeep buses that connect towns. For example, the trip from Gangtok to Pelling takes about 3-4 hours. Roads are continuously being developed to accommodate the increasing number of tourists.

Pelling is located near Geyzing, another small town that serves as the center of West Sikkim. Here, I witnessed the transformation of a small town growing with new hotels and restaurants welcoming more tourists, while still preserving the charm of nature and traditional culture well. Sikkim: Not Just Nature, But Life with Music and Flavor

The experience of Pering fried rice with Nepali street songs in Sikkim made me, mr.hotsia, feel the depth of this region. It is not only about high mountains and beautiful views but also the vibrant life of people who strongly preserve their unique identity.

If you want to experience Sikkim from a different perspective—not just as a tourist destination but as a real experience of life and culture—I recommend strolling through the small market in Pelling, listening to Nepali songs from street singers, sipping hot tea, and enjoying simple yet meaningful Pering fried rice.
