Milking Cows to Make Nepali Breakfast Milk in Sikkim, India
"This morning I, mr.hotsia, woke up in a small village in the state of Sikkim, India. Here, it’s not just the stunning Himalayan mountain views, but also a simple lifestyle deeply connected with nature. I had the chance to experience milking fresh cows at a small Nepali family farm, a traditional culture that remains strong in Sikkim."
Sikkim is a small state located in northern India bordering Nepal and Tibet. Especially in the towns of Namchi and Pelling, which I visited, locals still maintain traditional lifestyles. They live mainly relying on nature and livestock, especially raising cows for fresh morning milk, which is the heart of the Nepali breakfast in Sikkim.
I arrived at a small village cow farm not far from Namchi town, the main city of South Sikkim (read more aboutNamchi Town, South Sikkim, India). The atmosphere here is peaceful and cool, with fresh air from an altitude of over 1,600 meters above sea level. I saw a grandmother and her granddaughter skillfully milking cows by hand. The fresh milk is used for breakfast milk such as hot milk with bread or made into a local yogurt called “dahi,” a staple food of Nepali households in Sikkim.
Milking cows here is not just ordinary cooking but a ritual that reflects the bond between humans and animals. I spoke with the farm owner who told me that every cow is well cared for. They let the cows roam freely in green pastures before milking in the morning. The milk obtained is fresh and has a sweeter, richer taste than processed milk in big cities.
After milking, I tried drinking the fresh hot cow milk. The smooth taste and fragrant fresh milk combined with the cool mountain atmosphere made me feel truly warm and simple. This is the charm of Sikkim—not only its beautiful nature but also the culture and lifestyle that remain in everyday life.
Connecting Local Life with Travel in Sikkim
If you are planning to visit Sikkim, traveling to the capital Gangtok is a good starting point. mr.hotsia has shared his travel experience from Darjeeling to Gangtok here.Travel to Gangtok, Sikkim, IndiaIt is connected by highways and convenient jeep services. After that, you can easily take a vehicle to Namchi or Pelling.
Pelling is another town that impressed me greatly. At over 2,150 meters altitude, the views of the Himalayas and the Kanchenjunga peak are so close it feels like you can reach out and touch them (read the full review of Pelling atPelling Town, West Sikkim, India). Here, the pure nature and the lifestyle of the friendly Buddhist and Nepali people remain intact.
Nepali-style Breakfast in Sikkim
Besides the fresh cow milk I tasted, the Nepali breakfast here usually includes homemade bread, thin flatbreads similar to roti, or hot steamed rice served with milk and yogurt. There are also bean curries and various vegetables cooked with local spices, making breakfast in Sikkim unique.
I still remember the Nepali songs coming from the streets of a small village in Sikkim, creating an incredibly warm and lively atmosphere (click to watch the atmosphere and music atShe, the Beautiful Singer from a Small Village in Sikkim)
Lifestyle and Travel in Sikkim
Traveling in Sikkim mostly involves shared jeeps or buses, which makes you feel closer to the locals. I myself have taken jeeps from Gangtok to Namchi and Pelling. The scenery along the way is full of mountains and vast meadows, like entering another untouched world.
For those who love adventure and want to deeply experience the Sikkimese way of life, I recommend staying in homestays with locals in Namchi and don’t forget to try the delicious local food (see homestay information atHomestay with Locals, Namchi Town, South Sikkim, India)
Summary
The experience of milking fresh cows to make Nepali breakfast milk in Sikkim is a precious memory for me, mr.hotsia.
