Indian Chili, Very Spicy in Sikkim (Sikkim), the City of Sharp Flavors

Hello, I am mr.hotsia. Today, I will take everyone to experience a unique spicy adventure in the state of Sikkim, India, a land hidden in the Himalayas. The beauty of nature and diverse cultures are not the only things that captivate me, but there is one thing I can hardly forget — the "Indian chili" that is so spicy it makes you say wow!

Before getting to the chili, the spicy style of Sikkim, let me tell you about the journey to Gangtok, the capital city of Sikkim, which I used as the base for this trip.GangtokConnected to other cities by Highway 31A, which is accessible year-round. I took a jeep from Darjeeling to here. The scenery along the way was filled with green mountains and light mist, making the journey far from boring.

Indian chili in Gangtok market, intensely spicy flavor

In Gangtok, I had the chance to explore a vibrant fresh market bustling with Sikkim locals. Here, fresh and dried chilies are displayed in various stalls. What caught my eye the most was the Indian chili, unbelievably spicy. These chilies are not just hot but have a deep spice aroma that sometimes almost numbs the nose.

Indian chili in Sikkim is different from elsewhere because locals use it as a main ingredient in local dishes, whether in curries with fresh ground chili or chili sauces that are spicy enough to awaken the taste buds. I tried a chicken curry with chili at a small shop in Gangtok market and almost fell over. The heat comes gradually but is so intense that I had to pay respect to the chili.

Continuing the journey to Namchi and Pelling

After staying two nights in Gangtok, I chose to take a jeep to Namchi, the main city of South Sikkim.NamchiLocated over 1,600 meters above sea level, the atmosphere here is peaceful and very local. I stayed at a hotel near Central Park, the heart of Namchi.

In Namchi, I found another type of fresh chili used by locals in their kitchens. Some varieties are small but extremely spicy. I bought some to cook myself at a homestay and learned how to use chili in traditional Hindu and Buddhist dishes from the host. This was a profound and memorable experience beyond just eating spicy food.

From Namchi, I drove a jeep to Pelling in West Sikkim.PellingSituated at 2,150 meters high, here you can enjoy close views of the Himalayas and Kanchenjunga peak. It is also a hub for various Indian chili varieties used perfectly in local cuisine.

Lifestyle and culture with chili in Sikkim

mr.hotsia observed that in each region of Sikkim, chili is not just a seasoning but an integral part of the local eating culture and lifestyle. Most locals in Sikkim are Buddhists and Hindus who use chili daily in curries, dips, or even chili pastes made from dried chilies mixed with various spices.

Markets in cities like Gangtok, Namchi, or Pelling are full of colorful fresh and dried chilies sold year-round. I tried Pelling fried rice, which has a spicy flavor blended with Nepali spices, turning the meal into an unforgettable memory.Nepali song in PellingSung by a street singer, adding warmth to the atmosphere

My experience with Indian chili in Sikkim as mr.hotsia was not just about spiciness but also an eye-opening culinary journey. I saw the diversity of chilies and their uses in each locality, talked with locals, and heard stories about chili beyond being just an ordinary spice.
