Beautiful Nepali Songs in the Land of Sikkim, India
If you think India is a land of cultural diversity and music, I, mr.hotsia, would like to share my travel experience in Sikkim, a small northern state of India, where Nepali music fills every corner of the city, becoming a charm I will never forget from this trip.
Sikkim (SIKKIM) is a state surrounded by the Himalayas, with cool weather all year round and a majority Nepali-speaking population. Most of the music heard is beautiful and profound Nepali folk songs that tell stories of life, local ways, love, and the simple yet touching nature around.
Music sounds in villages and markets across Sikkim
I started my journey from Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, connected to India via Highway 31A, conveniently accessible from Siliguri in West Bengal (read travel details atTravel to Gangtok, Sikkim, India). Here, Nepali music plays from roadside restaurants and bustling fresh markets. I also saw local folk singers performing Nepali songs on the streets with a friendly vibe, their sweet and gentle voices charming me to stop and listen for hours.
From Gangtok, I traveled to Namchi, the main town of South Sikkim, located over 1,600 meters above sea level. Here, I stayed in a warm homestay with locals and heard Nepali songs sung closely in family gatherings and festivals (recommended to visitHomestay with Locals, Namchi Town, South Sikkim, India). In Namchi’s central market, folk songs and Nepali conversations blend perfectly, giving me a real sense of Sikkimese life filled with simplicity and happiness.
Another place that impressed me was Pelling in West Sikkim. Besides the stunning views of the Himalayas and Kanchenjunga peak, I met street singers who passionately performed Nepali songs full of emotion. Their music tells stories of Buddhist and Nepali life in the region. If you love heartfelt music, I recommend stopping here (read more about Pelling atPelling Town, West Sikkim, India)
Nepali street songs and local food appetizing sounds
My journey was not only about listening to music but also experiencing local food at markets and street stalls in Sikkim. Hearing Nepali songs alongside the aroma of local dishes like momo or Perring fried rice with unique flavors was an unforgettable experience.
While riding a jeep to Namchi, I watched clips of Nepali songs recorded from Sikkim’s streets, which felt like a real-life soundtrack here. These songs are not just entertainment but reflect the culture and spirit of Sikkimese people truly (watch sample songs atBeautiful Nepali Songs from Sikkim, India)
There are also interesting street singers from small villages singing Nepali songs with such beautiful voices that I couldn’t stop listening (click to seeShe, the beautiful singer from a small village in Sikkim) and the Perring fried rice song that makes you want to try the local food immediately (watch atPerring Fried Rice, Nepali Song from a Street Singer in Sikkim)
Life and travel in Sikkim connected with music
Sikkim is a state full of nature and a cultural blend of Lepcha, Nepali, and Tibetan peoples. Travel in Sikkim mostly uses local jeeps, which I enjoyed for the mountain views and folk music leaking from the vehicles or villagers along the way.
The route from Gangtok to Namchi and Pelling is one I highly recommend for adventurous travelers who love folk music. Besides beautiful scenery, you fully absorb the true culture of Sikkim (read travel notes and more details atBackpacking in Sikkim, India)
Summary
For me, mr.hotsia, listening to Nepali songs in Sikkim is not just about music but opening a door to the true lifestyle of the people here. The music heard everywhere—from small markets in Namchi to main streets in Gangtok—made this trip more meaningful and valuable than ever.
If you want to experience Sikkim in a deep and lively way, don’t forget to open your heart to Nepali music and follow my footsteps, mr.hotsia, here.
