Martam Homestay, Nepal Border, West Sikkim, India

If you travel about 100 kilometers north from Darjeeling, you will find a small town calledMartamin West Sikkim. This place is a hidden gem of homestays that mr.hotsia wants everyone to experience the authentic rural life near the Nepal border, which is only 30 kilometers away.

I learned about this homestay from a recommendation by the homestay owner in Pelling, which is not far from West Sikkim.Read about the Pelling homestay hereThe journey from Pelling to Martam takes a jeep ride through winding mountain roads filled with mist and stunning views of the Himalayan range. Staying here allowed me to feel the simplicity and warmth of a community that still lives a truly traditional lifestyle.

Quality homestay in Martam, 800 THB per night including local meals

The accommodation price of 800 THB per night is very worthwhile because it includes two meals: dinner and breakfast, prepared by the host using fresh ingredients from the backyard garden. The food I ate was traditional Nepali-Sikkimese dishes such as pea curry, hot steamed rice, and fresh vegetables picked from nearby fields.

The lodging here consists of well-separated houses with modern, clean flush toilets. You don’t have to worry about hardships like typical homestays in this region. The highlight is the wide balcony where you can fully enjoy mountain views and the Nepal border scenery. The morning sky here is clear with light mist, accompanied by birdsong and cows calling their calves, making me feel truly rested.

Lifestyle and activities experienced

mr.hotsia had the chance to join the host family in milking cows, an experience I had never done before. Seeing the close relationship between people and nature through cow care and milking here showed a strong and balanced connection in this area.

Additionally, I learned to cook simple local dishes with the host and shared meals with their warm family. The feeling of being at home abroad came instantly while eating and chatting with the hosts in this relaxed atmosphere.
