The original homeland of the Tai Phake people was in the city of Mawlong. Later, they followed King Ahma to the city of Kong (Mokong) near the large Pha cave, which is very ancient and gave the Tai Phake their name. In 1815 BE (1772 AD), they migrated across the Patkai hills to the town of Nunsuangkam, settling in Arunachal Pradesh. After floods damaged their homes, they moved to the banks of the Dik river. When the British ruled Nunsuangkam, they relocated to the banks of the Dihing river, where the Tai Phake Southern village remains today.

Located in Chaipura subdistrict, the Tai Phake Southern community in India speaks the Tai language daily. They practice Buddhism. Women wear patterned sinh skirts, men wear Burmese-style sarongs or white dhoti pants known as Hindu-style Thothi cloth. Their houses in the Tai Phake Southern village differ from those of the Tai Ahom in Guwahati, reflecting rural Thai-style architecture.

Their houses are built on stilts with high underfloor space and a small porch outside. The houses are made of real wood. In the Tai Phake Northern village, locals still speak Tai Phake, but old words are gradually disappearing and new words are not being created, resulting in many Assamese, Burmese, and English loanwords. The Tai language here may eventually disappear because to survive, a language must expand its vocabulary or borrow appropriately, otherwise it risks extinction.

Soon, it may become a dead language and fall out of use. The Tai Phake Northern people excel at weaving cotton but do not weave silk or raise silkworms, unlike the Tai Ahom who are skilled silk weavers. The Tai Phake Northern society is highly kinship-based; all visitors are considered relatives. Women there do not eat with men, as they serve and ensure men eat first.

I rented a car from Tinsukia to visit Namphake Buddhist Temple, a temple of the Tai people here. The revered monk Thep once visited this temple. The Tai people here are called Tai Phake, as mentioned above. I stayed in this house for two nights and was warmly welcomed as if I were in Thailand. You can enter any house to eat and drink. The Tai here eat rice, fermented fish called Pla Nao, and cultivate rice paddies. I encourage you to watch all the clips to fully experience the happiness and warmth I received. mr.hotsia - Travel with passion.
