Gangtok is located in the eastern Himalayas at an altitude of 1,650 meters.

Gangtok has a cool climate year-round with five seasons: summer, monsoon, autumn, winter, and spring. Temperatures range from an average high of 22 °C (72 °F) to a low of 4 °C (39 °F). Summer (late April to June) is mild with the highest temperatures. The monsoon season from June to September features heavy rainfall.
In winter, average temperatures range between 4 °C and 7 °C with snowfall. Gangtok is one of the main shopping and cultural activity centers in the city. Ecotourism has become an important activity in the region, including hiking, climbing, rafting, and other nature-focused activities. Approximately 351,000 tourists visited Sikkim in 2007. Gangtok is connected to the rest of India by all-weather highways. National Highway 31A links Gangtok to Siliguri, 114 km (71 miles) away in the neighboring state of West Bengal.
The highway also connects to nearby towns like Darjeeling. The nearest connection to the rest of India is the New Jalpaiguri station in Siliguri, 124 km (77 miles) from Gangtok. The closest airport is Bagdogra Airport (IATA code IXB) in Siliguri, 16 km (10 miles) from Siliguri city center. Gangtok is also connected to Bagdogra Airport by helicopter service.
