Batak House, Tuktuk Village on the island in the middle of Lake Toba
I, mr.hotsia, recently had the chance to experience the lifestyle of the Batak people, a prominent ethnic group in Indonesia settled in northern Sumatra, especially in Tuktuk Village on the island in the middle of Lake Toba, which is the largest volcanic caldera lake in Southeast Asia. I must say this trip was full of impressive moments from nature, lifestyle, and culture that remain uniquely outstanding anywhere in the world.
Tuktuk Village is located on Samosir Island in the middle of Lake Toba. I have previously written about Lake Toba, describing it as a volcanic caldera lake formed by a massive eruption tens of thousands of years ago.Lake TobaIt is a must-visit place for nature and culture travelers. Tuktuk Village serves as a starting point or rest stop chosen by many travelers before visiting the nearby island to see the orangutans.
Atmosphere and Lifestyle in Tuktuk Village
I took a walk exploring the village in the late afternoon around 4:00 PM. The weather became comfortably cool and the sunlight softened, creating a warm and peaceful atmosphere. I saw Batak houses with traditional architecture featuring steep roofs, which not only look beautiful and distinctive but also carry cultural and spiritual meanings. Most houses are by the lakeside, with small restaurants and accommodations. This setting reminded me of the close bond the locals have with water and nature.
Most people here live by farming and fishing. Some run unique Batak-style massage shops called “Batak massage,” which is another activity tourists often try to experience the culture and relax after long journeys. Additionally, the community clearly benefits from tourism income, as travelers worldwide are enchanted by the tranquility and beauty of this place.
Travel and Connection with Bali
If you have just departed from Bali, I recommend planning a connecting trip to northern Sumatra to experience more of Indonesia’s diversity. In Bali, I have shared about Ubud, which is the cultural and artistic center.Ubud, BaliHere you can experience beautiful Hindu temples and local dishes with rich flavors comparable to those of the Batak people. Traveling from Denpasar Airport to Bali city is also convenient.Read MoreFor trips that truly satisfy culture and nature travelers
Food and Dining in Batak House
When talking about traveling in Tuktuk Village, I, mr.hotsia, must say that food is another essential highlight not to be missed. Local dishes here focus on ingredients from the lake and surrounding land, such as Nile tilapia, locally called “Mila,” which tastes fresh and is affordable. There are also traditional dishes using local herbs and spices that create a rich and unique flavor. I have written about this in an articleMedan Cuisinewhich is deeply related.
For those who enjoy relaxing massages, there is Batak-style massage service here that combines traditional techniques with folk medical knowledge. I tried it and felt a difference from typical Balinese massages. It is truly an experience worth trying.
Impressions from mr.hotsia
I spent about an hour walking around Tuktuk Village, which is just the right amount of time to absorb the true essence of Batak life. The atmosphere is peaceful, the lake water is clear, the houses still reflect a long-standing culture, and most importantly, the friendliness of the people made me feel like I was coming home again.
If anyone has the chance to travel to Indonesia, don’t forget to visit the beauty of Lake Toba and Tuktuk Village. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.Tuktuk Village, Lake Tobais one of the places I, mr.hotsia, highly recommend everyone to experience for themselves.
