Ban Tha Suang, Muang Hongsa, Xaignabouli Province: Experience riverside life along the Mekong with mr.hotsia

Ban Tha Suang, pronounced by the Lao as "Ban Tha Suang," is a small village by the Mekong River located in Muang Hongsa, Xaignabouli Province, Laos. The village has about 40 households and a population of around 100 people. It is a community that firmly preserves the traditional riverside Lao way of life and is one of the destinations that mr.hotsia strongly recommends for anyone seeking true peace and authentic village life.

My journey to Ban Tha Suang started from Huay Sai town, where I slowed down and stayed one night at Pak Beng before taking the only boat at 9:30 AM that day heading to Luang Prabang. After just over an hour, I easily arrived at Ban Tha Suang. For those who want to continue to Luang Prabang, another 3-4 hour boat ride is required.

The name Ban Tha Suang has an interesting origin. Imagine the word "Tha Suang," derived from "Chotchuang" or "bright," reflecting the bright or shining rock located on a rocky hill in the Mekong River near the village's river pier. This rock has a local legend that it resulted from a competition to dig the Mekong and Nan Rivers between gods and sacred beings, giving the village a unique charm that I felt from the very first step upon arrival.

Simple Homestay Life with mr.hotsia at P'Porn's House

For my stay in Ban Tha Suang, I chose a homestay at P'Porn's house. Although not officially a homestay, since she is a relative of my friend, I got to experience the genuine local lifestyle here for only 200 baht per day, including three meals made from fresh local ingredients. The atmosphere at the house and village was very relaxed and friendly, with plenty of casual conversation.

The food here is simple but deeply flavorful. For example, the fermented fish dish I tried making myself following an authentic Lao recipe was so fragrant and delicious that I had to give it a thumbs up.mr.hotsia's video on making Kua Pla DekThis will give you a clearer picture of life and food culture in Ban Tha Suang.

Unique Fishing Activities on the Mekong River

What impressed me most in Ban Tha Suang was going fishing with P'Porn's husband, a true Mekong fishing expert. He uses a special net called "Mong," about 16 inches wide, to catch only large Mekong fish weighing 4-5 kilograms or more. The net is weighted with stones to stay stable underwater and uses floats or ropes to keep the top from sinking. Fishing is most effective during the rainy season when the water flow is gentler. Sometimes, they catch fish as large as 40 kilograms.

This fishing method is not just an ordinary activity but a deep lesson in living and connecting with nature. I gained experiences and stories from P'Porn's husband that showed me the Mekong River is not just an ordinary river but a vital lifeline that villagers depend on daily.

A Simple and Warm Community Way of Life

Ban Tha Suang does not have public electricity, but villagers have installed their own power from a waterfall near the village. There was no mobile signal when I visited, but locals said it would come soon. This reflects a simple lifestyle deeply connected to nature.

During my stay, I witnessed villagers' kindness and close cooperation, such as at funerals where everyone donates 20 baht and a bowl of sticky rice, showing love and unity. Or the "Yoo Duean" tradition where villagers help care for a mother who just gave birth, playing cards, drinking, and socializing all day and night. This warm cultural bond is something mr.hotsia has rarely seen in Northern Thailand.

Travel Routes and Connections to Nearby Towns

For travelers starting from Nan Province, getting to Ban Tha Suang is easy. Travel through the Huay Kon border checkpoint into Muang Ngeun, then take a bus to Muang Hongsa (about 100 baht), and then another bus from Muang Hongsa to Ban Tha Suang (100 baht), taking about an hour. Buses depart around 9 AM.

Ban Tha Suang can be a resting point to experience Lao riverside life before continuing by boat to Luang Prabang, or you can travel directly from Ban Tha Suang to Luang Prabang.
