Backpacking Southern Laos Cambodia 6: Morning Market Walk in Pakse

When it comes to traveling in southern Laos, the name “Pakse” is often one of the first destinations I, mr.hotsia, think of. As the capital of Champasak Province, Pakse is not only the gateway to southern Laos but also a city full of vibrant life every early morning, especially its morning market. Anyone who visits will immediately realize this is the heart of the community and the authentic lifestyle of the Lao people.

One morning in Pakse, I started my day waking up before dawn to head to the colorful morning market filled with the calls of local vendors. This market is located in the city center, just a short walk from my accommodation in the Main 14 area. The Pakse morning market is therefore an easy and convenient choice to experience the local way of life.

The atmosphere at the Pakse morning market is lively beyond description. The aroma of fresh herbs and spices fills the air. I walked past stalls selling fresh vegetables, seasonal fruits, and, of course, fish caught directly from the Mekong River. The rows of fresh fish, including snakehead fish, show the abundance of this river. This scene reminded me of fishing trips on the Mekong at Champasak that I wrote about in a previous article.Fishing on the Mekong River at ChampasakExactly that.

I tried simple made-to-order dishes like hot sticky rice with spicy Lao papaya salad and crispy grilled chicken at a small roadside stall that didn’t look like a restaurant but was so delicious I had to return several times. This simplicity combined with intense flavors is the charm of the Pakse morning market.

This market is not only about food but also filled with local products such as handwoven fabrics, carved wooden jewelry, and small souvenirs that reflect southern Lao culture. I saw Vietnamese people, a community long settled in Pakse, shopping and chatting casually, giving a sense of the multicultural lifestyle in this city.

Pakse is not just a transit town for tourists traveling to the World Heritage Wat Phu Temple in Champasak or even the route to Pakxong that I previously recommended inTraveling Pakxong, Pakse City, Champasak Provincebut also a city with a vibrant local life perfectly blended, and this morning market is the clearest reflection of that.

Getting to Pakse is not difficult at all. I have shared in an article aboutTraveling from Ubon to Paksethat the bus service between these two cities is very convenient, taking less than 3 hours. Upon arrival in Pakse, you can easily take a tuk-tuk to your accommodation or other destinations.

After exploring the market and recharging, I sat sipping strong Lao coffee at a roadside café, quietly observing people passing by—children holding fresh bread from a nearby shop and elders chatting warmly. This atmosphere is what makes me, mr.hotsia, love this city more with every visit.

If you are planning to visit southern Laos, don’t forget to stop by the Pakse morning market. It’s not just a market but a gateway to the culture, lifestyle, and true flavors of southern Laos. Finally, I, mr.hotsia, want to say that walking through the Pakse morning market is not just about buying and selling but about learning and experiencing the real way of life of the people here. Open your heart, walk slowly, observe the little details, and you will find that this morning market walk is full of stories and experiences more valuable than you expect.
