Traveling Don Bang, a Passage to Li Phi: The Forgotten Charm of Champasak Province
Hello, I'm mr.hotsia. Today I will share a unique travel experience in Champasak Province, Laos, through the Don Bang route. Many may not know this path well, but for me, it feels like discovering a peaceful corner and authentic local lifestyle that remains simple and warmly welcoming.
Starting at Don Khong, renting a motorcycle to cross to the head of Don Bang
For this trip, I stayed at Don Khong, a lively riverside town with its own charm. From Don Khong, I rented a motorcycle and took a ferry to the head of Don Bang, located south of Don Khong. Don Bang, also known locally as "Don Som," is a small island in the middle of the Mekong River, rich in nature and very peaceful.
A small confusion I encountered was the dual names of this island. When I asked locals, they said Don Som is the original name, while Don Bang is the more commonly used name today. The route from the head of Don Bang to the tail, called "Tail of Don Som," is about 8 kilometers long. It’s a small path passing through local villages, an ancient temple, and a community primary school.
A travel route never visited by foreign tourists
What impressed me most was that Don Bang is still not popular among foreign tourists. Even Westerners rarely visit. This place thus preserves the purity of nature and the genuine lifestyle of the locals. I rode my motorcycle through small villages, saw children playing joyfully, and adults greeting me warmly. It felt cozy and made me want to stay longer.
In the afternoon when I started feeling hungry, I asked locals by the Mekong River if there was any fresh food to try. They told me about "Pla Pli," a large local freshwater fish. I bought one for 100 baht and asked the locals to simply fry it with a sprinkle of salt, no extra seasoning.
The taste of local food eaten with sticky rice was superb
This fried fish paired with the sticky rice I brought was so delicious that I had to give it a thumbs up. The crispiness of the fish contrasted perfectly with the chewy softness of the sticky rice. This flavor is hard to find in typical Lao restaurants, which often serve small portions at high prices. I personally feel that food in Laos can sometimes be expensive and small in quantity, not ideal for travelers who want to eat heartily. But here in Don Bang, the simplicity and fresh natural ingredients made the meal filling and joyful.
Lifestyle and warm hospitality from the people of Don Bang
I deeply experienced the sincerity of the people here. Wherever I parked, someone would bring me water to drink without me asking. This is the beauty of slow travel that I, mr.hotsia, prefer over rushing to visit many tourist spots. Don Bang is perfect for those wanting to escape the hustle and truly connect with nature.
However, a warning for those inexperienced with motorcycles or beginners: some parts of the route are narrow rural roads and can be slippery. So please consider carefully and ride cautiously.
Connecting the route to Li Phi and Champasak town
For travelers interested in this route, Don Bang is a suitable transit point to Li Phi, another fascinating destination in Champasak Province. If you plan to continue to Li Phi, I recommend staying in Don Khong or Pakse first, then renting a motorcycle to cross over and visit Don Bang. This way, you can truly experience the local lifestyle and beautiful natural atmosphere.

Summary of experience from mr.hotsia
For me, Don Bang feels like stepping back in time. The simple lifestyle of the locals, the peacefulness of nature, and the authentic taste of local food make me want to return again in the future. For those who enjoy deep travel, not just passing through, Don Bang is an excellent choice.
A note for travelers who like this route: don’t forget to prepare your mind to embrace new experiences and improve your motorcycle riding skills, as some parts of the route can be challenging. But I assure you, the happiness and great memories you gain will be truly worth it.
