Evening Stroll in Pakse: Experience Life Along the Mekong River with mr.hotsia

If you ask, “Where should I start when traveling to southern Laos?” I, mr.hotsia, would say Pakse is a city with a unique charm that anyone who visits will fall in love with. Taking an evening stroll along the Mekong River in Pakse city is an experience you should not miss.

I have had the chance to travel to Laos many times, and every time I arrive in Pakse, I make time in the evening to walk along the Mekong River to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of a city that is not too big but full of interesting lifestyles and culture.

Pakse: The Capital of Champasak Province Full of Stories

Before sharing about the evening time, I want to give an overview of Pakse as the capital of Champasak Province, known as the tourism hub of southern Laos. It has World Heritage sites likeWat Phu Champasak Templewhich is not far from here, and there is also a very lively local fresh market called Talat Lak 14, where I once found unusual items like “bàng” or giant flying squirrels being sold (read the full experience atTalat Lak 14)

When I arrive in Pakse, I usually choose accommodation within walking distance to the Mekong River because in the evening the riverside atmosphere is cool and lively with the laughter of children and people coming to stroll or exercise.

Starting Point of the Mekong Riverside Walk

From my accommodation in the city center, it’s a short walk to the Mekong Riverside Road, locally called “Rim Khong.” This road runs along the river, lined on both sides with roadside restaurants, small cafes, and souvenir stalls. You can leisurely walk along, observing the simple lifestyle of locals blended with tourists seeking inspiration.

What I like most is the enticing aroma of street food—the fragrant grilled chicken mixed with the scent of hot steamed sticky rice makes me stop to try simple “grilled chicken Lao style” at a roadside stall before continuing my walk.

Evening Atmosphere and Activities in Pakse

In the evening by the Mekong, the air is much cooler than during the day but still warm with friendliness. You will see families having picnics, parents bringing their children to play in the water, or groups of youths chatting happily. I, mr.hotsia, like to pause and sip hot Lao black coffee from a small roadside shop while watching the last reflections of the sun setting over the Mekong River.

On some nights, there is a small night market where locals and tourists shop for snacks, souvenirs, or even traditional handicrafts. I have wandered through such markets and discovered local items never seen elsewhere, such as native vegetables, exotic fruits, and local drinks worth trying.

Connecting Travel and Tourism in Champasak Province

If you have more than one day in Pakse, I, mr.hotsia, recommend planning trips to nearby areas such as visitingWat Phu Templeor driving toPaksongthe coffee capital of Laos with beautiful waterfalls and nature. If you enjoy lively fresh markets full of fresh Mekong River seafood, Talat Lak 14 is another place I highly recommend.
