Bokaew Border Crossing Huay Sai Checkpoint, Bokeo Province, Laos
If you have traveled from Chiang Khong to Laos via the First Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge, you are probably familiar with the atmosphere at Huay Sai checkpoint, or as locals simply call it, “Bokeo Checkpoint.” I, mr.hotsia, have had the opportunity to pass through this checkpoint many times and would like to share my genuine experiences straightforwardly.
Bokaew checkpoint is the main border crossing connecting Thailand with Bokeo Province of Laos. It is an ideal starting point for travelers entering Huay Sai town or Ban Tonphueng, which is located not far from the checkpoint. I remember the first time I crossed from Chiang Khong, the immigration process was quick and straightforward, though you must prepare all necessary documents to pass smoothly.
After passing the checkpoint, the atmosphere immediately changes from the bustling Thai side to the peaceful and simple border town of Laos. Here, you will see the daily life of locals continuing in a simple way, with fresh markets and morning-evening markets of Huay Sai residents. As I have written before, this is a spot you should not miss because you can see Lao vendors selling fresh vegetables, fruits, and local foods energetically. It is also a source of local news for the community.
Traveling from Bokaew checkpoint to Huay Sai town is easy. There are tuk-tuks available at a standard price of 10,000 kip (about 40 baht), taking only about 5-10 minutes. If you have time, I recommend trying the Huay Sai bus station services.Read about Huay Sai Bus Stationbecause from here, buses depart to various towns in Bokeo Province, such as Luang Namtha, a popular destination for adventure travelers.
Connecting with the lifestyle and travel in Bokeo Province
If you have more time, I suggest visiting Ban Tonphueng, which is not far from Bokaew checkpoint. This town has a different charm from Huay Sai, as it hosts casinos and a growing special economic zone. The story of Tonphueng townthat I have written will help you understand the changes and development of this town better.
Regarding food in Ban Tonphueng, although there is a Chinese restaurant zone with relatively high prices due to mostly Chinese gambler customers, if you want to experience authentic Lao food, I recommend dining by the Mekong riverside. The local eateries here are affordable, such as stir-fried basil with fried egg for only 60 baht. The taste is delicious and the portion is generous. I often stop here to eat every time I visit.
For breakfast, I recommend trying pho near Ban Tonphueng High School. The food here is spicy in true Lao style, with dishes like larb and nam tok that I really like. It’s a great option for travelers who are not into casinos but want an authentic local experience.
The starting point of adventure in Bokeo Province
After passing Bokaew checkpoint, Huay Sai is a great resting point before continuing to other towns like Luang Namtha or even Luang Prabang, accessible by both land and river. For me, taking the bus from Huay Sai to Luang Namtha is very convenient and worthwhile. There are two daily departures at 9:00 AM and 12:30 PM. The distance is about 195 kilometers, taking around 4-5 hours. The fare is about 55,000 kip (220 baht), which is very affordable for travel within Laos.Read detailed travel information from Huay Sai to Luang Namthahere
If you want to experience life along the Mekong River near Bokaew checkpoint, don’t miss a boat trip to Don Sao Island, where wild cotton trees bloom beautifully during the flowering season. It is also a special concession area currently being developed for trade and tourism. The story of Don Sao Island, Ban Tonphuengthat I have recorded will give you a clearer picture.
Additional tips for travelers passing Bokaew checkpoint
For those planning to travel through Huay Sai checkpoint, don’t forget to prepare Lao kip cash, as Thai baht or other currencies are not widely accepted here. From my observation, most prices for goods and services are quoted in kip. A simple calculation is to multiply the kip amount by 0.004 to get an approximate baht value, for example, 10,000 kip x 0.004 = 40 baht.
Another thing that impressed me greatly when visiting here is the friendliness of the Lao people in Bokeo Province, including market vendors and tuk-tuk drivers who are always willing to help tourists, making my travel more convenient and enjoyable.
Finally, if you want to experience the peaceful, simple border town atmosphere of Laos with genuine cultural diversity, I, mr.hotsia, recommend visiting Bokaew checkpoint Huay Sai Bokeo. I guarantee you will discover new perspectives of Laos that many may not yet know.
