Summer storm hits Huay Xai, a small city by the Mekong that never sleeps
Hello, I'm mr.hotsia. Today, I want to share my real experience in Huay Xai, Bokeo Province, Laos. This small city by the Mekong River is where I had the chance to travel for two days before continuing to Luang Namtha. Many may know Huay Xai simply as a transit town or the easy boat crossing from Chiang Khong to Laos, but if you want to truly feel the atmosphere, I can tell you this place has charm. The recent summer storm event is an experience I want to share with friends.
From Chiang Khong to Huay Xai: A Unique Journey
After crossing by boat from Chiang Khong to Huay Xai, the journey was quite comfortable. Here, there isHuay Xai Bus Stationlocated about 3 kilometers south of the city center. If you take a tuk-tuk there, it's not expensive. The standard price is 10,000 kip, about 40 baht only. I chose to stay in the city to enjoy walking around the morning and evening markets and truly experience the Lao way of life.
Huay Xai Morning and Evening Markets: A Hub of Local Life and Flavors
The morning and evening markets of Huay Xai impressed me a lot because they are not just ordinary markets but community centers and local news hubs. I walked around, talked with vendors, and tasted fresh local food from the Mekong River, such as fish and shrimp sold by weight and freshly charcoal-grilled. I tried authentic Lao papaya salad with such a spicy flavor that I had to order a second plate.
If you want to know detailed stories about these two markets, I recommend readingMorning and Evening Markets of Huay Xai Peoplewhich I have written before. It will give you a clearer picture of the lifestyle of Huay Xai residents.
Summer Storm Hits Huay Xai: When Weather Changes Rapidly
One afternoon while I was walking along the Mekong River, the clear sky suddenly turned dark quickly. A summer storm hit unexpectedly with heavy rain and strong winds that uprooted and broke trees. The locals and I had to rush to safety. This event made me realize that in this region, no matter how hot the sun is, storms can come quickly and violently.
For a traveler like me, encountering such a storm was a new and exciting experience. I recorded photos and videos on my YouTube channel. You can watch it atSummer Storm Hits Huay Xai (Huay Xai Lao)I guarantee it’s so realistic that you will feel like you are there in the event yourself.
Lifestyle and Cultural Diversity in Bokeo Province
Huay Xai is not only known for its weather but also as the center of Bokeo Province with diverse ethnic groups and cultures. I traveled toBan Tonphuenga neighboring town not far away, where Lao, Lue, Yuan, Tai Dam, and other tribes live harmoniously. There is also major Chinese investment that has turned Ban Tonphueng into an interesting new economic city.
If you want to try local food, I recommend going to Ban Tonphueng. There are authentic Lao restaurants by the Mekong River with affordable prices, spicy flavors, and great atmosphere. For those wanting Chinese food in the casino zone, there are many options but prices are higher due to luxury. You can see details in the articleRestaurants in Ban Tonphueng, Laosthat I have written before.
Continuing the Journey and Tips from mr.hotsia
After resting and capturing the atmosphere of Huay Xai fully, I prepared to continue to Luang Namtha by bus departing from Huay Xai Bus Station twice daily at 9:00 AM and 12:30 PM. I chose the afternoon trip to rest fully before departure. The distance is about 195 kilometers, taking around 4-5 hours. The fare is not expensive, only 55,000 kip (about 220 baht).
If you plan to visit northern Laos and intend to stop at Huay Xai, I recommend allowing two full days because this city has more charm than you think. The markets, lifestyle, and natural events I experienced are important lessons for travelers.
