Huay Sai Storm (Stome Huay Xai), a riverside town in Bokeo Province, Laos
When talking aboutHuay Saia small town on the Mekong River in Bokeo Province, Laos, many people might not be very familiar with the name yet, but for memr.hotsiawho has actually traveled here, I must say that Huay Sai is a town with its own unique charm — the riverside atmosphere, the lively local market, and the simple lifestyle of the Lao people here.
But this time, I will share a special story — my direct experience with the “Huay Sai Storm,” or as I simply call it,stomewhich happened on the day I arrived in this town.
The storm atmosphere at Huay Sai
I traveled across from Chiang Khong, Chiang Rai Province, by bus crossing the Thailand-Laos border into Huay Sai town on a very windy day. The storm came unexpectedly, with strong winds that forced me to quickly find shelter. But it wasn’t an ordinary storm — the wind was so strong that I thought it might be a small typhoon coming through Bokeo Province.
The strong wind blew my hair wildly, and the houses along the street started to have leaves and branches flying everywhere. I looked out at the fast-flowing Mekong River and saw small waves crashing hard against the riverbank. This storm made the atmosphere of Huay Sai look raw and incredibly lively.
Huay Sai, a small town with big stories
Huay Sai is located in Bokeo Province, a province full of mountains, forests, and rich natural resources. About 90% of the area is mountainous. Bokeo itself covers more than 4,970 square kilometers and has a population of around 65,000 people. Huay Sai is strategically important because it borders Thailand and connects conveniently to other towns in the province.
For travelers like me,mr.hotsiathis town is a great starting point to explore Bokeo Province. From Huay Sai, there are regular buses to other towns like Luang Namtha, and even boat trips to Luang Prabang are very convenient. Huay Sai morning and evening markets
If you want to truly understand the lifestyle of Huay Sai people, don’t miss waking up early to visit themorning market. Here, the Huay Sai morning market is about 2 kilometers from the town center. The atmosphere is filled with bargaining voices and the aroma of fresh food — local vegetables, fish, and various meats. I spent several hours walking, taking photos, and chatting with vendors, experiencing the warmth and simplicity of life here.
The evening market is located along the northern road of the town, about a 10-minute walk along the Mekong River. This market is as lively as in the morning, offering ready-to-eat local dishes to try. The evening atmosphere is cool and comfortable, with beautiful views of the Mekong River. I often stop by to buy food and enjoy the view here.
Restaurants and local food in Huay Sai
The food in Huay Sai focuses on fresh local ingredients from the area and the Mekong River. I tried ordering dishes at a small roadside restaurant in town — a large plate of stir-fried basil with rice and fried egg at a traveler-friendly price. There are also authentic Lao dishes like larb, nam tok, and pho, which you should try to experience the local flavor.
If you like a Chinese-style atmosphere, Ban Tonphueng, not far from Huay Sai, has Chinese restaurants specializing in fresh seafood. Prices are relatively high but the taste is good, perfect for those who enjoy diverse flavors. Read more aboutrestaurants in Ban Tonphuenghere.
Easy travel to other towns in Bokeo Province
Huay Sai is a very convenient travel hub. I have taken buses from Huay Sai toBan Tonphuengand can also take boats to Luang Prabang or other towns in the province. The Huay Sai bus station is about 3 kilometers from the town center, and you can take a tuk-tuk for about 10,000 kip or approximately 40 baht.
This route is perfect for those who want to experience the diversity of Bokeo Province, which offers nature, mountains, and different cultures in each town.
Wat Chomkaew Maneerat - A viewpoint and art site not to be missed
When in Huay Sai, you should not miss visitingWat Chomkaew Maneeratlocated on a hill above the town. This temple features a beautiful teakwood ubosot in the Tai Lue style and oil paintings that tell fascinating stories of Laos. From the bell tower’s top, you can clearly see the Mekong River and the Thai side. It is a viewpoint that impressed me greatly on this trip.
My real experience with the Huay Sai storm
Back to the storm story I encountered in Huay Sai — on the day I arrived, the storm was so strong that I had to slow down my travel and find safe shelter. It felt like being in the midst of nature that is still raw and constantly changing. Despite the strong wind and some rain, it was an experience that made me feel closer to this town.
For those who love challenges and want to see nature in its true form, I recommend visiting Huay Sai during the windy season like this. I guarantee you will have unique memories.
Summary
Huay Sai is not just an ordinary passing town but a place full of stories, lifestyle, and interesting nature. The simplicity of the locals, the lively fresh markets, and cultural attractions like Wat Chomkaew Maneerat make this a destination that I,mr.hotsiawould like to recommend everyone to visit.
