Boat Crossing from Chiang Saen to Ton Phueng: Gateway to Tranquil Laos
If you've heard of Ton Phueng town, Bokeo Province, Laos, but haven't yet experienced it yourself, I, mr.hotsia, would like to share a true travel story. Traveling to Ton Phueng is not as difficult as you might think, especially for travelers who enjoy new routes off the main tourist trail. This is a peaceful corner of Laos hidden along the Mekong River opposite Chiang Saen District, Chiang Rai Province, Thailand.
Starting at Chiang Saen with a Classic Border Crossing
For me, this trip to Ton Phueng began simply at Chiang Saen Pier, a convenient border crossing point over the Mekong River into Laos without needing a permanent border pass. A temporary border pass is enough to travel immediately. Here, long-tail boats operate from the Thai side to the Ton Phueng border checkpoint in Laos, taking about 20-30 minutes. The riverside atmosphere in the late morning of April 2013 when I traveled was filled with soft sunlight and gentle breezes, making the boat ride warm, comfortable, and more enjoyable than expected.
The boat crossing from Chiang Saen to Ton Phueng is a unique experience because you get to see the traditional lifestyles of villagers on both sides of the Mekong. The long-tail boat passed small riverside villages where children played in the Mekong and fishing boats floated peacefully. These scenes are rare to find in big cities.
Ton Phueng Town: A City Retaining Traditional Charm
Upon arriving in Ton Phueng, the first thing to do is rent a small songthaew (shared pickup truck) for traveling around town and to the newly developing casino zone. The rental costs about 500 baht per trip, which is reasonable for Thai tourists like me because this town lacks public transport or motorcycle taxis commonly seen elsewhere. Most travel here is by private vehicle or casino shuttle services.
Ton Phueng is a highly ethnically diverse town, with the Lue people as the largest group, followed by ethnic Lao, Lahu, and over ten other tribes living together. This diversity creates a warm and friendly atmosphere. The locals maintain a simple lifestyle despite some economic development.
To get to know this town better, I recommend walking through small village markets, tasting local dishes at traditional restaurants, or visitingRestaurants in Ton Phueng, Laoswhich I have visited. The food is flavorful and made from fresh local ingredients.
Route to Don Sao Island: A Unique Duty-Free Shopping Destination
One interesting destination when visiting Ton Phueng isDon Sao Islandwhich, when I visited in 2013, was no longer really an island due to a road connecting it to the mainland, making access much easier.
Don Sao Island is a special economic zone with Chinese investment, featuring hotels, casinos, and a full duty-free market. Tourists from Chiang Saen on the Thai side can charter long-tail boats to visit without needing a border pass. The boat service costs about 500 baht per trip. I, mr.hotsia, have taken the boat to enjoy the Mekong views and riverside life here, and I can say it’s fun and offers a very different atmosphere from big city tourism.
Challenges of Traveling in Ton Phueng
If you are a traveler who enjoys challenges and wants a unique adventure, Ton Phueng is the answer. However, you must prepare well because public transportation is limited—there are no regular buses or motorcycle taxis like in other towns. Without a private car or rental, traveling can be quite difficult.
I, mr.hotsia, once tried to travel to Chiang Kok village near Sing District, heading towards Luang Namtha Province north of the Mekong, and attempted to find a boat to Ton Phueng but was unsuccessful because officials said there was no boat service on that route. Some locals may have private boats for rent, so for a comfortable trip, crossing by boat from Chiang Saen is the most convenient.
Connecting to Huay Sai Town and Nearby Attractions
Before arriving in Ton Phueng, I, mr.hotsia, stopped byHuay Sai Bus Stationand spent two days exploring the morning and evening markets, observing the daily life of the Lao people in this town in my usual style. Huay Sai is an important town connecting travel to Luang Namtha and other provinces in Laos.
In Huay Sai, there is also an ancient temple calledWat Chom Khao Mani Ratwhich I recommend visiting. Besides admiring authentic Lao architecture and art, you can enjoy panoramic views of Huay Sai town and Chiang Khong across the river. The peaceful atmosphere is perfect for making merit and relaxing the mind.

The boat trip across the Mekong from Chiang Saen to Ton Phueng, Laos, is one of the most memorable routes for me, mr.hotsia, because it offers a glimpse into simple and warm local lifestyles, beautiful nature, and gradual economic changes.
