Hotels in Ban Ton Phueng, Laos: A unique relaxation experience from mr.hotsia

When talking about Ban Ton Phueng in Bokeo Province, Laos, many people might think of a quiet small town by the Mekong River. But actually, Ban Ton Phueng offers a variety of accommodations and distinctly different atmospheres, which mr.hotsia had the chance to experience and stay at to share with you.

Ban Ton Phueng is divided into two main zones of accommodation that impressed me: the zone next to the casino and the traditional Lao village zone. Here, you can clearly see the differences in lifestyle and accommodation prices.

Casino and Old Market Zone: Convenient accommodation near entertainment venues

This zone features luxury hotels and casinos that have been newly developed in recent years, especially the nearby old market area, which perfectly blends old charm with modernity.

I saw an interesting hotel calledKapok Hotel (Suan Dok Ngiew Hotel)Located next to the casino, the rooms here are priced higher than usual but offer convenience and proximity to entertainment venues. No need to spend time or money traveling far. It’s suitable for tourists who enjoy convenience and lively atmosphere.

If you want to experience Ban Ton Phueng’s old market, there are also affordable accommodations available. It’s a spot where you can stroll through the fresh market, taste local food, and easily experience the local lifestyle. Plus, it’s close to many restaurants where I have dined at reasonable prices. Lao Village Zone: Peacefulness and traditional lifestyle

Another zone I chose to stay in is the authentic Lao village calledUthumporn Guesthousewhich is a bit away from the casino and old market. This place offers a quiet atmosphere, perfect for those who want to escape the hustle and truly experience the authentic Lao lifestyle in Bokeo Province.

I rented a local songthaew to travel around Ban Ton Phueng and Don Sao Island, which is famous for its kapok flowers blooming all over the island during the flowering season. There is also an annual kapok flower festival. Read aboutDon Sao Island, Ban Ton Phueng, Laoswhich I have previously written about.

Accommodation prices in this zone are quite cheap. A standard room costs about 300 baht per night, while air-conditioned rooms are around 500 baht. It’s very worthwhile for the warm, homely atmosphere and service compared to the luxury hotels in the casino zone.

Transportation and convenience in Ban Ton Phueng

If you come from Chiang Khong, Chiang Rai Province, crossing over to Ban Ton Phueng is very convenient, especially if you have visitedHuay Sai Bus Stationwhich is in Bokeo Province. Ban Ton Phueng is not far; you can take a local songthaew or rent a car from Huay Sai easily.

I personally prefer traveling by local songthaew because it not only saves costs but also provides a great opportunity to talk with locals and learn about their real lifestyle, which is something I, mr.hotsia, value more than taking taxis or expensive hired cars.

Experience food and lifestyle in Ban Ton Phueng

Speaking of food in Ban Ton Phueng, if you stay in the casino zone, most food is Chinese-style with dozens of restaurants side by side. Prices may be high and mainly cater to Chinese customers who come to gamble.

But if you stay in the Lao village zone or travel about 200 meters from the casino along the Mekong River, you will find authentic Lao-style made-to-order restaurants with affordable prices and very delicious food. I once enjoyed a plate of stir-fried basil with fried egg for 60 baht, which had plenty of rice and pork. It was a very memorable meal during my trip to Ban Ton Phueng.

Additionally, for those who want to experience authentic Lao food, I recommend stopping by street food near Ban Ton Phueng High School, where you can find larb, nam tok, and other fresh, tasty Lao dishes.

How to plan a trip to Ban Ton Phueng?

If you have limited time and do not intend to gamble, I recommend staying only in the old market zone or Lao village. One night is enough to walk around the market, taste food, and visitthe stupa in the middle of the Mekong River at Wat Don Sawan, Ban Ton Phuengwhich is an important religious and cultural site here.

Staying in this zone will help you truly experience the essence of Ban Ton Phueng while saving on accommodation and transportation costs within the town.
