Explore Tad Nam Yon, Bokeo Province, Laos - Rock Climbing and Waterfall Hunting with mr.hotsia

When mentioning Bokeo Province, many people might be familiar with Huayxai town or Ban Ton Phueng. But for me, mr.hotsia, this time I want to take friends to fully immerse in nature at “Tad Nam Yon,” a waterfall and rock climbing spot hidden in Bokeo Province, Laos. This place is my destination to discover the beauty of mountains and waterfalls that remain pure and peaceful, something rare to find nowadays.

After crossing from Chiang Khong, Chiang Rai Province by long-tail boat across the Mekong River into Huayxai village, which is the starting point of the journey in Bokeo Province, I spent two full days exploring the lifestyle at the morning and evening markets of the Huayxai people (Recommended reading: Huayxai Morning and Evening Markets), a hub for fresh produce and interesting local ingredients before continuing to Tad Nam Yon by tuk-tuk at a standard price not exceeding 10,000 kip (about 40 baht), following my travel style.

Tad Nam Yon is located in an area filled with steep limestone mountains and lush green forests. The surrounding atmosphere is perfect nature, truly suitable for adventurers and nature lovers. For those who enjoy rock climbing, Tad Nam Yon offers various climbing routes ranging from beginner to professional levels. I, mr.hotsia, felt very excited climbing the steep cliff, seeing panoramic views of the surrounding forest and the Mekong River flowing deep below. It was an unforgettable beautiful sight.

Besides rock climbing, Tad Nam Yon also has several small waterfalls hidden in the forest. I explored along small trails recommended by locals and experienced the refreshing sound of water hitting rocks. The clear, cool water is perfect for swimming to cool off after tiring hikes. Swimming in the waterfalls here made me truly appreciate the peace and simplicity of life in this place.

On the way back, I stopped to taste local food at Ban Ton Phueng, a small town not far from Tad Nam Yon (Read about traveling Ban Ton Phueng, Laos). Local riverside restaurants here offer a relaxed atmosphere and authentic Lao flavors. I tried stir-fried basil rice with fried egg for only 60 baht, served with generous portions of rice and pork. The taste was rich and balanced, perfect for those who want simple but extraordinary flavors (Recommended restaurants in Ban Ton Phueng)

If you like adventurous travel and dislike crowded tourist spots, Tad Nam Yon and Bokeo Province are options you shouldn’t miss. I, mr.hotsia, want to say this place still offers a genuine experience of local community, traditional lifestyle, and nature that remains beautifully unchanged.

For travel, the easiest way to visit Tad Nam Yon is to start from Huayxai town, which I have documented in detail in an articleHuayxai Bus StationThere you can take buses or tuk-tuks to various points within Bokeo Province easily. Huayxai itself is an interesting town with fresh markets and local lifestyles to explore.

If you have more time, don’t forget to visitDon Sao Island, Ban Ton Phuengwhich is not far from Tad Nam Yon. This island features beautiful bright red Bombax flowers and a large economic trade development project worth following for the future of this area.

In summary, traveling to Tad Nam Yon and Bokeo Province is an experience I, mr.hotsia, am very impressed with—both the pristine nature, rock climbing adventure, refreshing waterfalls, and the simple, warm lifestyle of the locals. For anyone looking for a new angle of Laos travel, I recommend visiting here once. You will surely have a unique and unforgettable experience.
