International border checkpoint Huay Kon - Nam Ngum. Ban Tha Suang Homestay, Ban Pak Ngum Homestay. For those who want to stay in an authentic Lao homestay surrounded by deep forest and the Mekong River, Mr. Hotsia recommends Ban Tha Suang (Tha Chuang, Thasuang). Ban Tha Suang is a small village with only a few dozen households located by the Mekong River in Hongsa city, Chaiyaburi province, Laos. It is about 30 kilometers east of Hongsa city. By car, there are 1-2 trips daily from Hongsa, taking about 1 hour.
To get to Ban Tha Suang, you can take a boat from Pak Bang or from Luang Prabang to Ban Tha Suang, which is convenient. There is a local-style homestay where I stayed. You can stay at Sister Nang Porn's house, which has separate accommodation right by the Mekong River. You can stay with locals or separately by the river. Activities and food allow you to fully experience the Lao way of life here. Actually, there are waterfalls nearby that are rarely visited, deep in the forest along the Mekong River, accessible only by boat.
If you want to travel there, contact Aunt Nang Porn to arrange a boat trip. You can also watch red ant egg gathering or cricket catching if it's the right season. Activities at Ban Tha Suang include fishing with locals in the afternoon or evening, walking to catch fish in the streams with Sister Nang, or strolling around the village. Learn to cook Lao meals for breakfast and dinner. If you want to stay deep in the Mekong forest and experience true nature, I highly recommend this place. The photos show my friends' trip.
We also had a traditional Bai Sri Su Kwan blessing arranged by Sister Nang. If you want Mr. Hotsia to take you on a trip, contact me; if I'm available, I can take you for a reasonable fee.
