Paklay, Xayaburi Province, Laos - Travel information about Paklay, maps, photos, clips. Paklay, Xayaburi Province. Other trips of mine in Xayaburi. Xayaburi local dishes are very delicious. Food and dining in Xayaburi. Travel from Xayaburi to Luang Prabang. Phou Du border crossing to Laos. Paklay Southern Bus Station. Food and dining in Paklay. Ban Tha Suang Homestay. International border checkpoint Huay Kon - Nam Ngum checkpoint. Paklay town is part of Xayaburi Province, named Paklay because it is located at the mouth of the Lai River flowing into the Mekong River.

Several years ago, Paklay was difficult to visit as it was deep in the forest. But now, with the Phou Du border checkpoint completed, entering via Phou Du from Uttaradit is only 30 kilometers from Paklay. It takes 4 hours to continue to Luang Prabang and 3 hours to Vientiane after the road is finished. The road is almost complete. Paklay town is on the Mekong River. From a traveler’s perspective like mr.hotsia, it’s not about buying port city goods. I recommend staying by the river to enjoy the view and take walks.

Dining by the Mekong River offers an amazing atmosphere. In the early morning and evening, stroll along the riverbank and observe the lifestyle of Paklay locals fishing. Walk towards the market to see what the locals do in the morning. I traveled to Paklay via Phou Du checkpoint by hitchhiking on a Lao corn transport truck for 30 kilometers to reach Paklay. Paklay town is spread out, not concentrated only in the downtown area. There are northern and southern bus stations: the northern line goes to Xayaboury and Luang Prabang, the southern line goes to Vientiane. Both stations are about 4 kilometers outside the town.

The houses of Paklay locals are wooden. I like that the people of Paklay smile brightly and are happy to talk and meet visitors. Paklay town has interesting Sai Ua sausage which I haven’t tried yet. The evening market is larger than the morning market and has a traditional feel that I really like. Activities when visiting Paklay include learning about the culture, possibly hitching a boat ride to fish on the Mekong River with locals, or walking around local homes. When I visited, the road along the Mekong River was under construction and dusty, but once finished it will be even more attractive. Paklay has ETL 3G coverage.

There is a large office in the town center. There is a grilled squirrel shop which I haven’t seen elsewhere; this town focuses on grilled dishes like grilled duck and grilled squirrel. Try it if you can—I haven’t tried it yet. I think one night’s stay in Paklay is enough to walk around in the morning and evening. Stay at a hotel by the Mekong River. When I stayed at Jinny Guesthouse, it was 200 baht per night, with a fan, private bathroom, but no wifi. mr.hotsia May.
