Phonsavan (Phonsavan) is like the capital city of Xieng Khouang province because Phonsavan has the Plain of Jars, attracting tourists from around the world. The Xieng Khouang or Phonsavan bus station I recommend is the main station you must use when traveling by bus to visit the Plain of Jars. The old Phonsavan bus station is located in town next to Xieng Khouang Hotel, while the new bus station is 4 kilometers outside town towards Luang Prabang. Buses going to Sam Neua and short-distance buses still depart from the old bus station.
Long-distance buses now stop only at the new bus station. When I took the bus from Xieng Khouang, it left from the old station and stopped again at the new station. From Phonsavan station, there are daily buses to Sam Neua. The fare from Xieng Khouang to Sam Neua is 240 baht per person, taking 8 to 10 hours. Buses depart around 8 AM and arrive in Sam Neua around 5 PM, with another trip at 7 PM arriving in Sam Neua the next morning.
This evening bus comes from Vientiane and does not depart directly from Sam Neua. Buses to Vientiane and Luang Prabang: Regular buses from Phonsavan to Vientiane cost 300 baht per person and take 11 hours, departing at 9:30 AM and 4 PM. VIP buses cost 340 baht per person, also taking 11 hours. Regular buses from Xieng Khouang to Vang Vieng cost 250 baht per person and take 6 hours, departing at 7:15 AM. VIP buses cost
340 baht, take 6 hours, and depart at 7:30 AM. The new Xieng Khouang bus station has expensive restroom fees. Regular buses from Xieng Khouang to Luang Prabang cost 290 baht per person and take 10 hours, departing at 8:30 AM. VIP buses to Luang Prabang cost 320 baht, run for 10 hours, and depart at the same time. From Xieng Khouang, there are buses to Vietnam's Kham city costing 70 baht per person, taking 2 hours with 4 trips daily. Buses to Suoi city, Vietnam cost 70 baht per person, take 1 hour, with 3 trips daily.
Buses to Nong Het cost 70 baht per person, take 4 hours, with 4 trips daily. For easier travel to Vietnam, from Xieng Khouang you can travel directly to Vinh city, Vietnam. These buses run only on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays, departing at 6:30 AM and taking 10 hours. There are also buses from Xieng Khouang to Hanoi, but only on Thursdays, departing at 12 PM and taking 15 hours. Additionally, at the bus station, there are buses to Plain of Jars Group 3 costing 30 baht per person,
taking 30 minutes. Actually, besides traveling by car, you can also fly to Xieng Khouang via Lao Airlines. Lao Airlines from Vientiane to Xieng Khouang costs $53 per person, round-trip tickets cost $101 per person, or you can fly from Luang Prabang with one-way tickets costing $40 per person.
