Starting from arranging cars and tours, traveling has become more convenient. Anyone in Xieng Khouang can be contacted to rent a car and ask for the price, or you can contact the guesthouse where we stayed. When I traveled, I stayed at Night Guesthouse. They also organize tours. Visiting the Plain of Jars in 2014 is easier. They have built a tourist center and a Plain of Jars museum. There are displays explaining how the Plain of Jars was formed and demonstrations of bombs, including how the bombs dropped by the Americans worked in this area.

This center is about 1 kilometer from the Plain of Jars. We bought tickets to visit the Plain of Jars, then took an electric golf cart service to the site. After that, we explored the Plain of Jars on our own. On the way back, they have vehicles to take us back to the ticket point. There are souvenirs such as keychains made from bomb fragments for sale. I bought a bottle opener as a souvenir. A warning about bombs! Many unexploded bombs still remain in Xieng Khouang. It will take another hundred years to clear them all.

On the route the golf cart takes to see the Plain of Jars, you can still see areas where bomb clearance is ongoing. The warning to be careful about bombs is not a joke; they really exist. When traveling, do not go off the designated path. If you go to relieve yourself in the forest, a bomb might explode. Be cautious! Enjoy traveling the Plain of Jars in Xieng Khouang with Mr.Hotsia (stay at the same hotel as Mr.Hotsia, click here). The Plain of Jars was created by humans for some ritual purpose.

The Lao people believe that in the past, the local ruler wanted to celebrate something or needed to ferment a large amount of liquor. So they carved sandstone jars with tight-fitting lids to ferment liquor. The location of the Plain of Jars has water sources flowing through, confirming that water was essential for fermentation. Over time, these liquor fermentation jars turned into stone. Some of the stone jars from Xieng Khouang were moved to Vientiane for safekeeping.

Later, they were stored in a walking area. You can see the sandstone is of different colors clearly. These stone jars are said to be over 2,000 years old. There is no definite evidence about the exact year or who made them. The Plain of Jars is a unique phenomenon in the world, attracting tourists to come and touch these jars themselves. The Lao government does not prohibit touching them. During the Indochina War, many jars were destroyed by American bombs.

There are clear signs of bomb damage. Around the area, there are many large craters due to carpet bombing over the town of Phonsavan. It is a pity that such ancient artifacts were destroyed (Read about the bombed city of Xieng Khouang?). The Plain of Jars is not only found in Laos; other countries have some, but not as many as Laos. Laos has three groups of Plain of Jars.

The first group is the largest and most numerous, located 15 kilometers southeast of Phonsavan, with a total of 250 jars. Each jar weighs about 600 kg. The largest jar in the first group weighs up to 6 tons. The second group is 25 kilometers south of the city, with only 90 jars. The third group is 10 kilometers south of the second group (35 kilometers from Phonsavan), with 150 jars. All three groups require an entrance fee of about 20 baht.

The first group of jars is the most popular because it is closest to the city and has the most jars. Near the first group, there is a cave used as a bomb shelter during the American bombing. I bought a tour only to the first group because it was the cheapest. Group tours cost about 500 baht. If you ask several tour companies, you might get a cheaper price. Tourism in Laos from this era onward allows independent travel without needing a tour, unlike before when people had to buy tours to visit Chiang Mai. Nowadays, buying a tour to Chiang Mai is considered outdated. Laos is the same; traveling independently is easy.

For example, to visit the Plain of Jars in Phonsavan, we took a bus to Nong Khai, then another bus to Vientiane, and then a direct bus to Phonsavan. I stayed in Muang Pak and bought tours myself. Nowadays, more Thai people travel to Laos independently.

Soon, those who buy tours to Laos will be considered outdated. Mr.Hotsia June 2010. Because there are still many areas in Xieng Khouang Province, Houaphan Province, Laos, where bombs have not been cleared, it is important not to walk off the designated paths. You might encounter bombs left from the war that did not explode but are ready to explode anytime. But don't worry too much, just avoid walking through forests or mountains outside the designated areas. Take a vehicle to the Plain of Jars. Travel to Plain of Jars.
