Food and Dining in Kale-Myoh: Local Flavors That Mr.Hotsia Must Share
When talking about Kale-Myoh (Kale; Kalaymyo, Kalemyo) in Chin State, Myanmar, many may still be unfamiliar. But for Mr.Hotsia, this is another destination worth exploring, especially for its uniquely charming food. The aroma and flavors here clearly reflect the local way of life, and it’s an experience I don’t want you to miss.
I arrived in Kale-Myoh via KBZ Airlines from Mandalay. The flight was short, costing about 110 USD, which might seem a bit high but was worth the convenience and new experiences gained immediately. I stayed at the Taug Za Lat hotel opposite the airport, a well-known place among foreign travelers. Kale-Myoh Market: A Hub of Food and Culture Not to Be Missed
After unpacking, I didn’t hesitate to explore the town. The first place to visit wasKale-Myoh Town MarketThis market has both morning and evening sections, each with its own charm and special dishes.
The morning market is known for shrimp paste fried rice, which is not easy to find elsewhere in Myanmar. At that time, I walked to the opposite side of the market entrance and found a stall selling fragrant shrimp paste fried rice. The aroma of shrimp paste mixed with a hint of palm sugar sweetness made this dish smooth and delicious, so I ordered another plate. Every bite tasted like savoring the lifestyle of the local people.
In the evening, the street market becomes a gathering place for shops selling Khao Soi and Tai Yai noodles, famous in Kale-Myoh. These shops are usually packed with local customers who keep coming back. I didn’t miss trying them myself. The Khao Soi here differs slightly from Chiang Mai’s version, focusing on a stronger spice aroma and a moderate level of heat. The Tai Yai noodles are served in a perfectly balanced sweet and salty broth with a variety of meats, including pork and chicken, to choose from.

Kale-Myoh is not just a city with delicious food but also an important gateway for travelers heading toHakha Cityin Chin State. The easiest way to get to Hakha is to fly into Kale and then take a car for about 12 hours. Traveling directly by car from Mandalay to Hakha takes longer, and the roads are currently under improvement.
Culturally and culinarily, Kale-Myoh is influenced by the Tai Yai and Mon people living in the area, making the food diverse and richly flavored. Each dish is not just a meal but a story of the locals and the region’s history.
