Dawei Beach Market: Coastal Lifestyle in Tanintharyi Region
When talking about beaches in Myanmar that are not well known to Thai tourists but have charm and authentic local atmosphere, you must mentionDawei SeaorDawei Beachlocated in Tanintharyi Region, Dawei Province. This is a small destination that I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to visit myself, and I can say it is very different from the beaches we are familiar with in Thailand.
Dawei is a quiet town located in southern Myanmar, just a four-hour drive from the Thai border. Many locals here can speak some Thai because many young people from Dawei work in southern Thailand, such as Kanchanaburi, Ranong, or Prachuap Khiri Khan, making travel and communication with locals not too difficult.
Traveling to Dawei Beach and the Surrounding Atmosphere
From Dawei town, I rented a motorcycle with a local driver for 10,000 kyats, about 300 baht, round trip for approximately 15-20 kilometers. Along the way, we passed Dawei University, which is an interesting photo spot. Upon arriving at the beach, I found a peacefulness rarely found at popular beaches in our country.
The sea here has very shallow sandy shores. When the tide is low, you have to walk hundreds of meters to reach water suitable for swimming. The beach atmosphere is family-oriented, with Dawei locals spending their holidays here, such as during the end of Buddhist Lent or Myanmar's Thingyan Festival (April 14-17). This makes the beach less crowded than typical tourist spots, which is a charm that allowed me to see the real lifestyle of the locals.
Beachfront Stalls: Dawei-style Food and Souvenirs
Along Dawei beach, there are small stalls where you can relax and buy souvenirs comfortably. It is not as busy or chaotic as Thai beaches. There are simple clothing shops and handmade souvenirs, such as shell jewelry that looks classic and traditional, similar to Bang Saen decades ago.
Fresh seafood is another highlight that I, mr.hotsia, am very interested in. From shrimp, crab, fish, to squid, the Dawei market offers plenty. However, at the beach, formal seafood restaurants are not many. Most visitors probably cook seafood themselves at home. My favorite is the stallCoconutwhich is just before the beach on the right side. I ordered grilled shrimp at 300 baht per kilogram and a plate of squid, enjoying fresh, affordable, and delicious seafood without much seasoning.
Beach Life and Relaxation of Dawei Locals
After visiting the beach, most Dawei locals go to nearby hot springs, where there are two pools for mineral baths. I heard it is a way to cool down and relax here. The mineral water is poured over the body using a traditional bowl, which is an interesting custom very different from beach trips in our country.
Another impressive aspect is the simple yet charming lifestyle of the people at the beach. I saw Dawei families sitting and eating by the sea without any rush, unlike the crowded tourist beaches I have experienced in Thailand.
Connecting Dawei Experiences with City Touring and Local Food
If you want to truly experience Dawei's lifestyle, visiting Dawei beach should be combined with exploring the town. I recommend renting a motorcycle with a driver like I did to visitDawei Town, Tanintharyi Regionand the Great Buddha Temple with its fascinating Light Pagoda legend. Also, don't forget to try local dishes atTanintharyi Cuisinewhich includes roti mataba, Burmese coffee, and fresh seafood, even though these can be rare in town.
For a full authentic Dawei experience, I, mr.hotsia, suggest staying overnight in Dawei town first, then heading to the beach in the morning or afternoon to see both the town and the sea perspectives completely.
Summary of Impressions from Dawei Beach
Dawei Beach is a perfect place for those who love tranquility and want to experience the genuine lifestyle of Myanmar people. It is not just a beach trip but also a chance to learn about the culture and way of life here up close. Although it lacks the facilities of popular beaches, the charm of simplicity and sincerity of the people impressed me, mr.hotsia, and makes me want to visit again.
If you are someone who enjoys deep and off-the-beaten-path travel, don't forget to addDawei Seato your list of places to experience yourself.
