Dawei Coffee Morning Myanmar: Tasting Burmese Coffee in Dawei

When talking about Dawei in the Tanintharyi Region, a province in southern Myanmar, many might think of beautiful beaches or ancient temples. But for me, mr.hotsia, tasting Burmese coffee here is truly an experience not to be missed.

Dawei is a small, warm town closely connected to Thailand, located just 4 hours from Kanchanaburi Province near the Thai border. Most people here speak Thai well because many young Dawei locals have worked in southern Thailand, whether in rubber tapping or fishing. When I arrived at the bus station, I could immediately communicate in Thai, making travel and communication much easier.Read more about traveling in Dawei

Morning with Burmese Coffee in Dawei

One morning in Dawei, I decided to search for a Burmese coffee shop known for its unique flavor and rich aroma. Most coffee shops here serve it alongside roti mataba, a special type of roti dough baked on a hot clay pot until puffed. It is eaten with a rich curry sauce. Locals simply call it "Dawei coffee" in English, but the coffee taste is unlike anywhere else because they add sweetened condensed milk and a special seasoning powder, resulting in a sweet, creamy, and intense coffee flavor I had never experienced before.

The atmosphere in the small roadside coffee shops in Dawei is simple but full of warmth. The owners greet you with smiles and casually chat about daily life. I, mr.hotsia, sat sipping coffee while watching people come out to buy roti and morning coffee energetically.

Experience Dawei's Lifestyle and Breakfast

Besides coffee, the breakfast here is another charm I really enjoyed, especially the mataba which is crispy outside and soft inside. I once ordered mataba with my favorite coffee, sitting amidst the aroma of dough and spices. Such flavors are hard to find elsewhere.

Some days I chose to eat Dawei-style fried rice at a roadside shop, where the owner made delicious fried rice with a fried egg. It’s a breakfast that reflects the simplicity and dedication of the local people.Check out the Dawei fried rice menuIf you like street food that is not overly seasoned

Coffee on the Rooftop of a Department Store in Dawei

For those who want to see a high view of Dawei, I recommend going up to the rooftop of a department store in town, which has a small coffee shop. You can enjoy good Burmese coffee while admiring the peaceful small town view full of the vibrant life of Dawei locals.

Sitting and sipping coffee while watching the small busy streets and hearing street vendors calling out is a scene that reminds me of the simplicity and hidden happiness in daily life here.

Variety of Coffee and Food in Tanintharyi Region

If you are interested in local coffee and food in the Tanintharyi Region, I recommend exploring the morning market in Dawei. There you will find many menus ranging from traditional Burmese coffee to made-to-order dishes such asMade-to-order food in Daweiincluding fresh seafood famous in this townDawei SeafoodAlthough I haven’t found a favorite shop yet on my last visit, I can guarantee prices are much cheaper than on the Thai side.

For market adventurers, I recommend visiting the vegetable and fruit marketDawei Vegetable Marketwhich is a hub for fresh produce and local spices that add color to your trip and open up the world of Burmese flavors even more.

Summary of Morning Coffee Experience in Dawei by mr.hotsia

Burmese coffee in Dawei is not just a drink but a cultural experience I, mr.hotsia, want everyone to try. Sipping Burmese coffee with roti mataba in a small town where people speak some Thai made my journey warm and truly flavorful.
