Burmese Likae in Dawei: Experience the riverside temple fair atmosphere in Tanintharyi Region
Many times I, mr.hotsia, have had the chance to travel to southern Myanmar. The small town called “Dawei” in Tanintharyi Region always creates unique memories for me, especially during the annual temple fair at Shinpin Kyaw Temple, the large central temple in Dawei town, where I witnessed the Burmese Likae or Musical folk drama full of vibrant colors and authentic folk music rhythms.
Dawei is not far from the Thai border. Counting the distance from Kanchanaburi Province, it takes about 4 hours to travel, making tourism here convenient for Thais, especially those who want to experience authentic Burmese lifestyle. Many young people from Dawei have worked in Thai border provinces such as Ranong, Kanchanaburi, or Prachuap Khiri Khan. I have talked to several of them and found that this cross-border relationship makes travel and communication much easier.
Temple Fair at Shinpin Kyaw Temple: The Spirit and Fun Gathering of Dawei People
I arrived in Dawei during the Buddhist Lent Festival, when Shinpin Kyaw Temple holds its big annual temple fair. The atmosphere was full of locals and tourists who came to pay respects to the pagoda and join the fair featuring Burmese Likae performances. Besides the beauty of the pagoda, which is said to emit light from its top on special days, what impressed me most was the “Face-Rubbing Deity” statue in the temple grounds. Locals believe that if you have pain anywhere, rubbing that part on the deity and making a wish can heal the illness. I also tried this belief, which was a unique and profound experience for me.
At this temple fair, there is Burmese Likae, a folk art combining music and drama. The lively atmosphere was filled with firecracker sounds and local food stalls. I tried various Burmese dishes here, including Burmese-style noodles and refreshing fresh fruit smoothies that helped cool down the heat.
Lifestyle and Food in Dawei
Speaking of food in Tanintharyi Region and Dawei, mr.hotsia recommends trying “Mataba,” a Burmese roti dough baked until puffed and crispy, served with rich curry sauce. It is a very popular breakfast in Dawei. There are also Burmese coffee shops serving drinks with milk and unique coffee powder, which I also tried and enjoyed.
For lunch, I tasted seafood here. Although it did not fully meet all my expectations, the prices were much cheaper than in Thailand, especially for local shrimp and fish. For those who want to fully enjoy seafood flavors, I recommend reading more in the article.Dawei Seafoodwhich I have compiled my experiences in.
For dinner, I chose to stroll around the temple fair at Shinpin Kyaw Temple to experience the local atmosphere. I found several Burmese noodle stalls, as well as snacks and refreshing smoothies that helped relieve my travel fatigue very well.
Dawei: Simple Town Full of Charm
Dawei is a small town but full of warmth and the simple lifestyle of locals. If you travel on your own, I recommend renting a motorcycle with a local driver, as it helps you understand the place and culture better, especially the route to Dawei beach, which I experienced. The atmosphere there is peaceful and still very natural.
Besides visiting temples and temple fairs, the town also has two interesting tall buildings. One of them is a shopping mall with a rooftop café where you can sip drinks while enjoying a high-angle view of Dawei town, which is another experience I recommend trying.
