Pathein Umbrella Making Village Mr.Hotsia recommends hotels (Ngwesaung) Pathein (Pathein) Ayeyarwady (Ayeyarwady) I woke up early to walk through Pathein morning market. It's a small market with zones for fish, pork, and vegetables. Very few people. I walked briefly then went up to Shwemokhtaw Paya, built during King Ashoka's era, in the center of Pathein city. It is a revered site here, built 2000 years ago. After descending, I ate local Pathein food, simple rice with curry, very tasty. Then I returned to shower and freshen up.
Then I took a local trishaw to visit the umbrella-making village. They only make umbrellas here, not for sale. At first, I gave money for an umbrella, but later they returned the money. Pathein umbrellas are famous worldwide. In this village, they also do blacksmithing and make thanaka. The locals are very friendly. Visiting the umbrella village costs about 30 baht for the trishaw ride there, then you explore on your own and take the trishaw back for another 30 baht.
I hired a driver to tour several houses for 5,000 kyat or 150 baht. After visiting the umbrella village, I took a ferry to see rural homes. Crossing by boat, I saw Pathein villagers living like my hometown Bang Bo years ago, but with roads reaching several thatched houses. They live simply and happily. I like the people here. After touring the countryside, I watched locals fishing in the Pathein river.
They use nets to catch small fish. Some villagers dive underwater with fishing lines to catch shrimp. It was very exciting to see live Pathein river fish and large river shrimp like those I ate in Myanmar today. The homes and lifestyle of Pathein villagers resemble my childhood home, except for electricity and mobile phones. The rural Pathein area is like my Bang Bo hometown 40 years ago. Mr.Hotsia enjoyed the trip. The boat I hired took me across and continued the tour.
