You can rent a trishaw to visit. Each household specializes in different umbrella-making tasks, such as painting, making the frame, or gluing. The umbrellas are not made entirely in one house. They clearly divide the work and do not sell umbrellas to tourists.
When I visited, I asked to buy an umbrella and they sold it to me, but shortly after, they came back and returned the money, saying it was a souvenir gift. That's when I realized that selling umbrellas to tourists is prohibited here. If you want to buy an umbrella, you should buy it in the city of Phra Singh at a reasonable price. The only problem is how you will get it home.
The highlight of visiting the umbrella-making village is not just seeing the umbrellas but experiencing the lifestyle of the people of Pathein—their use of boats, cooking, homes, and daily life. It resembles the lifestyle of Thai people. Mr.Hotsia recommends renting a trishaw to tour around the village, then stopping by a house that makes thanaka and watching ironwork nearby. There is a small market where you can stroll and sip local tea to fully experience the lifestyle. It’s an amazing atmosphere. Mr.Hotsia travels with satisfaction.
