Mr.Hotsia recommends hotels in Ngwesaung, Pathein, Irrawaddy Region. Pathein is the capital city of Irrawaddy Region in Myanmar, located on the Pathein River. It is about 190 kilometers from Yangon and has a population of around 300,000, mostly Karen and Rakhine people. A major attraction here is the Shwemokhtaw Pagoda, said to have been built by Emperor Ashoka of India according to legend.

There is also a cultural museum. The city is famous for Pathein umbrellas, with villages making umbrellas where you can tour by trishaw. In 2016, I traveled from Yangon to explore Pathein in Irrawaddy Region. The bus left Yangon at 7:30 AM from a station about 20 kilometers from the city center. I took a taxi for 8,000 kyats to the highway bus station. The bus fare to Pathein was 8,000 kyats (240 baht) and the journey took 4 hours.

People in Pathein look somewhat like Indians. The city has many roti shops. Bicycle trishaws run throughout the city at fares of 10-20 baht per ride. Pathein has few tourists; most pass through to the beach at Ngwesaung, about 40 kilometers west, a 2-hour trip. Tomorrow I will stay there. Pathein has the Pathein River flowing through it, and locals still use boats for transportation.

Young men and women here wear sarongs more than in Yangon. Tonight by the river there is a walking street market (Saturday). The buildings are crowded with vendors selling thanaka, food, and clothes. Young people sit by the Pathein River on chairs enjoying the breeze. My favorite delicious food is chicken biryani, cooked very well. Pork skewers are sold everywhere for just over 1 baht each. There are many Burmese-style food stalls and also Chinese noodle shops. There are Chinese residents and shops selling Chinese-style goods and food.

There are many popular Chinese-style barbecue shops with fragrant sauces (I have a video). The people here are friendly, greeting and smiling, allowing me to film in every shop. I am happy to stay here. Tonight I stay at Paradise Hotel for 20 USD per night, with cold air conditioning and no mosquitoes. The owner takes care of everything and speaks good English. I think this hotel is the cheapest I found here. I woke early to walk the Pathein morning market, which is not very large, with zones for fish, pork, and vegetables, and very few people.

I walked briefly to visit Shwemokhtaw Pagoda, built during Emperor Ashoka's time in central Pathein. It is a place of worship built 2,000 years ago. Afterwards, I ate local Pathein food, simple curry rice, which was delicious. Then I showered and took a local bicycle trishaw to visit the umbrella-making village. They only make umbrellas here, not sell them. I initially gave money for an umbrella.

But later they returned the money. Pathein umbrellas are very famous worldwide. In this village, they also do blacksmithing and make thanaka. The villagers are very friendly. Visiting the umbrella village costs about 30 baht for the trishaw ride there, then you explore on your own, and 30 baht for the return ride. I hired a trishaw to tour several houses for 5,000 kyats (150 baht). After visiting the umbrella village, I took a ferry to see rural houses.

Taking the ferry, I saw Pathein villagers living in houses similar to those in my hometown Bang Bo years ago. Many houses have thatched roofs and simple construction. They seem happy. I like the people here. Mr.Hotsia enjoyed traveling here. On the woven basket bus to Pathein, I met locals who speak Thai. I rode a motorcycle 4 kilometers to find accommodation. Views from the hotel I did not stay at and the one I stayed at show the atmosphere of Pathein city. GPS coordinates (POI): 16 46 51.623 N, 94 43 51.906 E.

This city sells a lot of salted fish, bananas, and coconuts at Pathein market. The chicken biryani is very delicious. Night atmosphere at Pathein walking street night market.
