I relied on meals at Ban Longkok, a village adjacent to the western side of Indawgyi Lake, about a 30-minute motorcycle ride from the safe house where I stayed, just before reaching the temple located slightly in the middle of the lake.
On the first day’s lunch, a Tai Daeng woman dressed in traditional Tai Daeng attire cooked rice and meals for me along with her family, giving me a glimpse into the traditional lifestyle and culture of the Tai Daeng people living by Indawgyi Lake. One evening, I returned to Ban Longkok and continued making traditional Tai Daeng desserts, followed by cooking with Tai Daeng relatives in the same house.
In this village, every household uses well water; everyone must carry water from the well for cooking. Various vegetable gardens are cultivated and harvested for consumption without buying from anywhere. Most villagers at Ban Longkok are farmers. Overall, I think the Tai Daeng people around Indawgyi Lake live similarly to Thai people from many decades or centuries ago, as if time has stopped there.
