Myanmar is home to one of the largest freshwater lakes in Southeast Asia, located in the Mohnyin administrative area of Kachin State, Myanmar. The lake spans 13 kilometers from east to west and 24 kilometers from north to south. Around it, there are more than 20 villages. The main ethnic groups living around the lake are the Shan, who are Red Tai people, and the Kachin. Most of them engage in agriculture.
This area is 166 meters above sea level and serves as the Indawgyi Wildlife Sanctuary. Indawgyi Lake was designated as a wildlife sanctuary in 1999 by the Ministry of Ecotourism, covering 780 square kilometers. It hosts a diverse range of rare mammal species and birds. It is one of the top 10 important bird areas in Myanmar where endangered species can be found, including Greylag geese, Asian openbill storks, and purple swamphens, which are especially prominent in January.
For birdwatching, you can rent a boat from the guesthouse where we stayed or find local villagers’ boats nearby. However, remember that night trips are prohibited. You must inform the authorities if you plan to go out at night so they are aware. For this trip, I, Mr. Hotsia, stayed at Indawgyi Lake for about two weeks, renting a motorcycle to visit various villages around the lake during the day because the authorities do not allow us to travel outside the village (Lone Ton) or from the guesthouse at night.
Touring is therefore limited to daytime only. I recommend contacting the guesthouse staff to arrange transportation or boats for sightseeing.
