In Burmese, Myitkyina means 'near the big river'. 40 km north is the starting point of the Irrawaddy River, formed by the confluence of the Mali and Maykha rivers, called Myit-son (Myitkyina). March 2016, Mr.Hotsia travels with joy.

Traveling joyfully to Myitkyina, Kachin State, Myanmar. From Mandalay, I left at 3:00 PM and arrived in Myitkyina at 10:30 AM. The outbound trip was on a VIP sleeper bus but without reclining seats, only tilted seating. Road repairs have shortened travel time from the expected noon arrival. For bus tickets, book at Mandalay's Fortune Hotel for both ways or buy yourself, though it's a bit difficult. The return bus leaves at 10:00 AM, arriving Mandalay at 4:00 AM. Flights from Yangon or Mandalay are also available, costing over 100 USD. Both bus and flights have multiple schedules. Myitkyina is now open for city tours; outside the city, check which towns are accessible by asking the hotel. I stayed at New Light Hotel, 17,000 Kyat per night. There are several hotels in Myitkyina, with 3-4 near the market where tourists can stay.

Myitkyina locals resemble Chinese people, originally from Tibet, related to the Shan people of Hakka according to local stories. Myitkyina people have fair skin; women are beautiful. Many have Indian-like features, about half, with some sporting long beards resembling Indians. The cuisine focuses on roti and biryani rice.

Myitkyina has attractions popular with Burmese tourists and locals alike, such as the origin of the Irrawaddy River, 45 km north of the city. Motorbikes can be rented for 300 Baht per day to explore independently. The Myitkyina River is formed by the confluence of the Maykha River from China and the Mali River from India. I experienced the water there. I was impressed by Kachin women who wear traditional fabrics with unique patterns, mostly yellow, worn by nearly everyone, in vibrant colors. Their beauty made me reluctant to leave the city. I also had a facial massage and hair wash by a Myitkyina woman—an excellent experience. Mr.Hotsia travels joyfully, April 2016. The list of Kachin State towns open for tourism is divided into permitted and non-permitted areas. Some require motorbike access.
