There are three assumed reasons: 1. To make them less attractive so that men from other villages would not pursue them, so they tattoo their faces to look less beautiful. 2. To mark their faces so they can be recognized as from the same village; if abducted and left on the way, villagers can find them easily. 3. It is a long-standing tradition passed down through generations. Facial tattooing stopped about 60 years ago. Currently, only about 30-40 tattooed women are still alive. When they pass away, the tradition will end.

To visit the village, you must hire a guide. A day trip costs 30,5000 Kyat (1,000 Baht) per person and covers 3 villages. Staying overnight in a local home costs 70,000 Kyat (2,000 Baht). They may offer to take you deeper to visit 4 more villages for an additional 20 USD or 700 Baht, totaling 7 villages. If you take a boat for another 8 hours, you can enter Chin State, but a government permit is required. On this trip, I stayed overnight and did not travel to Chin State by water.

Traveling to Sittwe can be done by bus from Yangon or Mandalay, but it takes many hours. It is better to rest in Magway or Pyay to avoid exhaustion. From Pyay to Mrauk U takes 8 hours. You can also fly to Sittwe. From Sittwe, take a boat to Mrauk U for 5 hours or a car for 4 hours. To reach the tattooed face villages, the first 3 villages are 2 hours by boat, and the last 4 villages take about 1 more hour.

Facial tattooing among the Chin people in Hakha, the capital of Chin State, no longer exists as a village tradition, though occasionally tattooed individuals appear in town. Chin tattooed face people live in northern Chin villages near Mrauk U, Rakhine State, and deep in the southern forests of Chin State. I have seen photos of young Chin women with facial tattoos who remain beautiful. However, the tradition is likely to disappear as no one tattoos faces anymore, having stopped decades ago.

If you want to visit within the next 10-20 years, it is still possible. After that, it will become legend. Mr.Hotsia For more information from Wikipedia, the Chin are an ethnic group in Myanmar, divided into 32 subgroups. I heard from Chin people in Hakha that their legend traces back to Tibet. Each Chin subgroup has distinct cultures.

There is a facial tattoo ceremony for young women, with each subgroup using different colors such as black, navy blue, or bird designs on the forehead. These patterns are unique to each group, and members of the same group share the same design. The facial tattooing was meant to disguise the beauty of Chin women because ancient stories say Chin women were very beautiful and attracted outsiders, including Burmese kings who often took them as wives or servants.

Tribal leaders ordered Chin girls to tattoo their faces to hide their beauty starting around ages 12-13. Skilled tattooists performed the work continuously, usually taking up to 2 days with breaks only for meals. Almost every girl cried from the pain during tattooing, could not eat or open their eyes due to swelling. Some had to be tattooed multiple times if the design faded or was unclear until the color was dark enough.

The facial tattoo culture remains only in a few remote rural villages in the forest. Elsewhere, it is no longer practiced because there is no longer a risk of Chin women being abducted. Skilled tattooists have mostly passed away, so if anyone wants a tattoo here, there is no one to do it. Additionally,

At one time, the Myanmar military government banned Chin women from facial tattooing, considering it barbaric, so villagers stopped. However, the current Myanmar government wants to promote tattooed Chin women as a tourist attraction.
