When I travel to Mae Sariang, I must pass Ob Luang. Actually, Ob Luang is in Chiang Mai province.
But since everyone traveling to Mae Hong Son via Mae Sariang must pass here, I include it in Mae Hong Son province for easier information search because many think it is in Mae Sariang, Mae Hong Son province. The main attraction at Ob Luang is the Ob Luang gorge where the Mae Chaem River flows through. On top, there is a bridge to cross back and forth. It is a height challenge because the bridge swings like a monkey bridge. Besides the gorge, inside there is a viewpoint that requires climbing up the hill.
I also recorded a clip for you to watch. The breeze is cool on top with a view of the road from Hod to Mae Sariang. Besides the viewpoint at Ob Luang, there are ancient human traces, but I found not much. Most visitors just stay at the Ob Luang bridge and return. To get to Ob Luang, it is located at kilometer marker 17 on Highway 108, overlapping Hang Dong Subdistrict, Hod District, and Ban Pae Subdistrict, Chom Thong District. It is a narrow mountain pass with cliffs flanking the river.
This creates a deep canyon. The cliff depth from the Ob Luang bridge to the normal water level is about 32 meters. The narrowest point is 2 meters wide. The length of the narrow pass is about 300 meters. Nature has wonderfully created a marvel in this land. Some may wonder what Ob Luang means. 'Ob' or 'Aob' in the local language means narrow pass, 'Luang' means big. Ob Luang is the specific name for this giant rock gorge where the Mae Chaem River squeezes through.
Another meaning is a valley with a flowing stream (Canyon). Inside Ob Luang, water hitting the rapids sprays mist and makes a loud roaring sound all the time. The rock terraces and cliffs eroded by the rushing water year after year create strange and beautiful patterns. Visitors marvel at how the huge rock walls blocking the river split or cracked to let the water pass. I spent about 1 hour at Ob Luang before continuing to Mae Sariang.
My goal is to visit this peaceful small town and taste Salawin fish. For Ob Luang, it is a transit tourist spot for those going to Mae Sariang or onward to Khun Yuam, Mae Hong Son.
