Mae Sariang is home to Lawa and Karen people, while Khun Yuam is home to the Thai Yai. In this trip, I learned a little about Mae Sariang's history.

Mae Sariang today is a tourist city not only visited in winter when everyone heads to the Tung Bua Tong fields. Tourists come almost all year round because Mae Sariang is a mountain town with cooler weather than other places. You can feel comfortable in any season. Mae Sariang has many old temples because it was an ancient community. So, on this trip, Mr.Hotsia woke up early to stroll around leisurely.

Walking along the road early in the morning when it’s not crowded, strolling to see temples, visiting the Yuam Riverbank, and enjoying a hot bowl of jok (rice porridge) is still possible. The morning streets are perfect for walking with few vehicles. Monks collect alms, and the locals smile to greet the new day with fresh air. Seeing scenes like this makes me want to walk every morning. I found a simple wooden house that looks beautiful and very inviting (see the picture below).

I rested and chatted with the homeowner, who kindly welcomed tourists with a smile. After relaxing, I continued to Wat Pa Haeo (the cemetery temple), which is a Burmese-style temple. I climbed up to see elderly people dressed in traditional attire making merit. Exploring Mae Sariang by waking early and walking is highly recommended. Let’s say hello to Mae Sariang. I really liked that beautiful house. Morning temples in Mae Sariang. Let’s look at some information about Mae Sariang district.

Mae Sariang district is one of the seven districts of Mae Hong Son province. It is an important district because it is located about 164 kilometers from the provincial capital (Mueang Mae Hong Son). It hosts many provincial government offices such as the provincial court, prosecutor’s office, district prison, provincial treasury, land office, transport office, customs checkpoint, immigration checkpoint, National Broadcasting Station, and airport.

It is also a commercial and trade center for neighboring districts such as Mae La Noi and Sob Moei. Mae Sariang city is historically known as Yom Tai or Yom city, with a community established for over 600 years, roughly the same period as Chiang Mai’s rise. Yom was a frontier city significant to the history of the Lanna Kingdom.

Several important figures from Yom played roles in history, including the great king of the Lanna Kingdom, 'Tao Lok,' who ruled Yom Tai during King Phaya Sam Fang Kaen’s reign. Later, Tao Lok was supported by a Chiang Mai noble named Nai Sam Dek Yoi (the third son of his parents, nicknamed 'Dek Yoi') to overthrow the throne from his father by exiling him to Sat city.

Sat city is located about 60 kilometers north of Mae Ai district, Chiang Mai province (now part of Shan State, Myanmar). Yom was originally inhabited by indigenous peoples such as the Lawa and Karen. In 1900, the government upgraded it to a district named Mueang Yom. In 1924, to avoid confusion with Khun Yuam district in the same province, the name was changed to Mae Sariang.

The new name comes from the Mae Sariang River flowing through the district. Mae Sariang was once the largest district in Thailand (now the largest is Umphang district). Morning atmosphere in Mae Sariang, walking along the Yuam River, strolling in downtown Mae Sariang, the Yuam River flowing through Mae Sariang, mountains surrounding Mae Sariang, many temples in the city, beautiful Mae Sariang signposts, and the Mae Sariang city gate.
