I was captivated from the moment I was in Khun Yuam.
I talked with a shop at Khun Yuam morning market and heard the names Alawa, Suay Thamin, Peng Mong (watch the Alawa clip in Khun Yuam). The first time there, I was determined to find the makers to taste fully and record clips to share with friends. On my way from Khun Yuam, I talked with the driver about making Tai Yai desserts (watch the driver talking about Tai Yai desserts). When I arrived in Mae Hong Son, it was a good chance to get information while getting a haircut, learning which houses make Tai Yai desserts to sell.
These desserts are among the top delicious treats in Mae Hong Son. I’ve added the shop locations on the map below. If you come to Mae Hong Son and don’t find them at the market, usually the lady sells in the morning market, but I recommend visiting her house late morning to enjoy fresh hot desserts like I did. There are three Tai Yai desserts to taste in Mae Hong Son: Alawa, Suay Thamin, and Peng Mong. So if you come to Mae Hong Son, don’t miss these because they are very delicious. We warned you. Starting with Suay Thamin dessert.
Made from sticky rice, steamed then pounded, sugar is added and stirred until sticky. Coconut cream is poured on top and baked until both top and bottom are slightly burnt, creating a blackened mark on the dessert’s surface. I believe 'Thamin' comes from this color. I like Suay Thamin the most; it’s delicious, fragrant, sweet, and creamy. Next time I’ll eat a lot. Another Tai Yai dessert is Peng Mong or Beng Mong, also called Tai Yai cake, made from rice flour and palm sugar.
It’s baked like a Thai custard cake with heat from both top and bottom, then topped with coconut cream boiled with sugar, giving it a delicious taste and a brown sugar color. I tried Peng Mong but didn’t like it much because I usually don’t like cake desserts. The last one I haven’t tried yet is Alawa. Alawa dessert is made from rice flour mixed with coconut cream and palm sugar. I’ll save that for later; if I get to try it, I’ll take photos and clips to share. Just follow along :) Mr.Hotsia, watch the clip of me tasting Suay Thamin and Peng Mong. I like Suay Thamin better.
Fragrant and delicious, I want to eat more. The Tai Yai dessert seller invites you in Tai Yai language to visit Mae Hong Son and try Suay Thamin at this shop. View Untitled in a larger map. This is Suay Thamin, the Tai Yai dessert that won my heart. Extremely delicious, fragrant, and sweet. Local Mae Hong Son desserts: Peng Mong, Suay Thamin, Alawa Jung. Fresh hot Suay Thamin just made because I followed to see at the house. The blackened top is the real Suay Thamin. Peng Mong has fragrant sugar spots that impress. The shop is near Nong Jong Kham; I’ll add the map soon.
