Locals might wonder whose restaurant it is, but if you say 'Than,' everyone knows it well because it’s delicious and famous everywhere.
Even when I talked to people in Mae Hong Son town, they knew Than Bor Kan restaurant. Why did the owner change the restaurant’s name? Because people often misunderstood it as 'Torn Bor Kan,' meaning unwilling service, just tolerating. So it became Than Phochana today. Brother Than (see his photo below with me) is the owner and an expert in Salawin river fish. I watched him catch, cut, and fillet fish; he could easily appear on Iron Chef. He has run the restaurant for many years with a loyal crowd.
There was a time he had little time to cook, so customers disappeared, but now he cooks every dish himself, and the deliciousness is unstoppable. Both locals and tourists like me come here. Brother Than’s restaurant is next to rice fields; in the rainy season, the fields are bright green as in the photos, and in winter, the rice turns yellow. It’s beautiful anytime. The restaurant has about fifteen tables, excellent location, and beautiful views. I’ll share the number to call for directions: Brother Than 084-820-5665. You can also ask locals in Mae Sariang; almost everyone knows where it is.
Regarding food, I recommend asking Brother Than what fish are available today, preferably freshly caught this morning or just now. Everything is delicious. For those who want to eat Salanga fish, I suggest not frying it as it becomes tough; stir-frying with spicy sauce is best for a memorable taste :) Mr.Hotsia. Khlom Luang Jim or Kraho fish are the same species but called Khlom, which tastes better. Big Salanga fish stir-fried spicy is delicious; frying doesn’t work well. Salawin fish, Catfish, and Pork fish.
Than Phochana Restaurant, formerly Than Bor Kan, Tel. 084-820-5665, specializes in natural fish from the Salawin River. I think this is one of the best restaurants in Mae Sariang. Beautiful views at Than Bor Kan restaurant. The Salanga fish are very large, and the Khlom fish are big with large scales.
