Wat Hua Wiang is located on Nasi Nat Bamrung Road, Chong Kham Subdistrict (near the morning market at the traffic light intersection). It was built in 1863 and houses Phra Chao Para La Khaeng, a beautifully adorned city Buddha image. It is said to be a replica cast from 'Phra Maha Muni,' the original Para La Khaeng Buddha in Mandalay, Myanmar, brought by Uncle Chong Pho Ya (and others).
The Buddha image was brought in parts, nine sections in total, floated down the Pai River, assembled at Wat Phra Non, and enshrined at Wat Hua Wiang or the city center temple. Mae Hong Son locals regard it as a city guardian Buddha image. The viharn housing Phra Chao Para La Khaeng has been newly rebuilt, preserving the original architectural style. Wat Hua Wiang Mae Hong Son is adjacent to the Mae Hong Son morning market.
