Passing Doi Saket to Mae Khajan, turn right about 30 kilometers before Phayao, there is the Kwan Phayao viewpoint at 891 meters above sea level. The sign is a bit confusing and makes it seem higher. This is the only spot where you can see Kwan Phayao beautifully from above, so most cars stop here to rest and enjoy the view. There is no rice sold here, only sticky rice with grilled pork. If you want a full meal, hold on for another 30 kilometers to eat in Phayao. I have skipped meals here before, but the beautiful view makes it worth forgiving.
After enjoying the view and taking photos, continue for a few more minutes and you will arrive in Phayao. Mr.Hotsia says Kwan Phayao is located in Mueang Phayao District, Phayao Province. It is the largest freshwater lake in Northern Thailand and the third largest in the country (after Nong Han and Bueng Boraphet). The word "Kwan" in the local language means "lake" or "swamp." It is a natural water source in the heart of Phayao city, with mountain ranges as the backdrop. It is formed by water flowing from 18 streams, with an average annual volume of 29.40
million cubic meters. It is home to over 48 species of freshwater fish and covers an area of 12,831 rai. It serves as a breeding ground for various fish species. The scenic surroundings of Kwan Phayao make it a beautiful natural tourist attraction that impresses visitors. It can be said that the heart of Phayao city lies at Kwan Phayao. Along the lake shore are restaurants and public parks for relaxation. Historically, Kwan Phayao was originally a river floodplain with the Ing River winding through it from north to southeast, along with many small ponds and water channels flowing down from Doi Luang mountain, connecting the area.
This fertile river floodplain has supported human settlements for a long time. In the middle of Kwan Phayao, archaeological remains of an ancient temple built during King Tilokaraj's reign have been found. The temple is named "Wat Tilok Aram." On important Buddhist days such as Magha Puja, Visakha Puja, and Asalha Puja, there is a unique candlelight procession around the temple on the water, the only one of its kind in the world.
