Visitors come to Khao Kho to enjoy the beautiful nature.
The style of tourism in Khao Kho is to stay at resorts or accommodations located in beautiful spots with great views and fresh air, which are found all along the Khao Kho route from the Camp Son junction through Khao Kho district up to the Khao Kho summit, then turning towards Phetchabun town. When planning a trip to Khao Kho, you should decide which route to take. I have some recommendations. There are two main routes: entering via Phetchabun town or via Phitsanulok.
If entering via Phetchabun, explore the town first, then leave the town and turn left to visit Khao Kho district, enjoy the views and stay overnight. Then continue to visit Lom Kao, then go up to Phu Thap Boek. On the way down, visit Phu Hin Rong Kla and exit via Phitsanulok. The other route is entering via Phitsanulok and traveling back. I prefer the first route because I think climbing Phu Thap Boek on the steep way is safer than driving down a steep road. Regarding accommodation, you can book lodging in Phetchabun province in advance.
Because during the winter season most places are fully booked, sometimes even during long holidays. Alternatively, you can drive around and look for a place you like to stay, which might take some time but guarantees accommodation you are satisfied with. Khao Kho is known as the "Switzerland of Isan". From Phitsanulok to Lom Kao, Phetchabun, just a few kilometers before Camp Son, you will pass a coffee shop with a very beautiful view. At Camp Son, I stayed at a place costing a little over a thousand baht per night with a very nice view. At night, I dined at Krua Khao Kho restaurant.
If you visit Phu Thap Boek, don't forget to try Lom Kao rice noodles. Khao Kho has cool and comfortable weather, so bring a jacket. It was an important base for seizing the area. Currently, the authorities have turned it into a weapon museum open to visitors daily, displaying artillery, tank wrecks, and weapons used in battles on Khao Kho, including briefing rooms for group visitors.
