Most tourists visiting Phu Thap Boek come to enjoy the view and see the sea of mist. Phu Thap Boek is a high cliff overlooking Lom Kao with beautiful views, but the weather must be just right—not too clear nor too foggy—to see the sea of mist on the Lom Kao side. On the other side of Phu Thap Boek is the Hmong village with cabbage mountain views. It's nice to drive along the ridges toward the village and stop to take photos of the Hmong cabbage fields. The weather up there is cool and comfortable in summer and rainy seasons, and very cold in winter.
You must bring warm clothes. To travel to Phu Thap Boek, Route 1: from Phetchabun, take Highway 21 to Lom Sak intersection, continue straight on Highway 203 passing Lom Sak district to Lom Kao district about 17 km, then turn left onto Highway 2011 and Highway 2331 to reach Ban Thap Boek. This route is shorter but steep. In my opinion, driving up is safer than driving down. If you go up via Lom Kao, you can descend via Phu Hin Rong Kla and exit through Phitsanulok.
If you go up via Phu Hin Rong Kla, which is less steep, and visit Phu Thap Boek, you can descend via Lom Kao to enjoy Khao Soi noodles there as a reward for the long and steep descent. Another option is to park in Phetchabun town, maybe stay at a new hotel like Khosit Hotel, then rent a red songthaew from there to Phu Thap Boek. Or visit Lom Kao and Lom Sak, park there and rent a car to go up Phu Thap Boek. I personally drive up via Lom Kao. The road is very steep. If you are not familiar with mountain driving, do not drive yourself.
Regarding accommodation at Phu Thap Boek, during winter you can rent tents here, managed by government agencies. There are also a few homestays (as far as I know), such as the inn run by locals from below and another by the Hmong people. Prices are high, over 2,000 baht per night, but the atmosphere is amazing as you sleep among the Hmong cabbage fields. Visiting in the rainy season costs 1,000-1,500 baht per night, and in winter 2,000 baht.
At Phu Thap Boek, there are food stalls run by the Hmong and others likely from the local administrative organization selling at standard tourist prices. If you stay overnight on Phu Thap Boek, don’t worry about food. Whether to stay on top depends on your preference. Young people or early working age mostly stay in tents on top. Older visitors usually stay below and go up to see the sea of mist. Additional information about Phu Thap Boek is from the Tourism Authority of Thailand.
Phu Thap Boek is located in Wang Ban subdistrict, 40 kilometers from Lom Kao district along the route from Lom Kao to Phu Hin Rong Kla, or about 90 kilometers from Phetchabun province center. Phu Thap Boek is approximately 1,768 meters above sea level, the highest point in Phetchabun. It features beautiful mountainous terrain with pure natural surroundings and cool weather all year round due to cool winds from the Himalayas and its high elevation.
Therefore, you can see wide panoramic views. In the morning, clouds and sea of mist cut across the peaks of Phetchabun mountains. Currently, Phu Thap Boek is home to the Hmong hill tribe village, who migrated to Ban Thap Boek, villages 14 and 16, under the care of the Phetchabun Hill Tribe Development Center. Around December to January, pink Sakura or wild Himalayan cherry blossoms bloom across the mountains.
At night, you can see sparkling lights from houses in Lom Sak district below, resembling stars on the ground. This makes Phu Thap Boek an attractive tourist destination, drawing visitors who enjoy cold weather, hill tribe lifestyles, and pure natural environments, under the saying: 'Sleep at Thap Boek, experience the cold.' Wat Pa Phu Thap Boek is a rainwater collection point in the sky, established on September 9, 1999.
It is believed this was when the cool wind from the Himalayas passed through, bringing the lowest temperature on Phu Thap Boek to collect water to be offered as sacred Buddhist holy water in the grand royal ceremony celebrating the 6th cycle birthday on December 5, 1999. Inside the temple is the Maha Chedi Bodhipakkhiya Dhamma, a diamond stupa with 37 peaks housing relics of the Buddha and arahant relics, measuring 40 meters wide, 40 meters long, and 80.09 meters high.
The world's largest cabbage plantation and hill tribe village. In late rainy to early winter, Phu Thap Boek is very beautiful due to the world's largest cabbage plantation grown by the Hmong hill tribe. In winter, Phu Thap Boek is colorful with wild Himalayan cherry blossoms or Thai Sakura blooming on various hills. The Phetchabun Research Station, Thap Boek experimental plot of Kasetsart University, is a demonstration station for growing cold climate crops like strawberries, pears, plums, and peaches, selling fresh seasonal produce at the plot.
Stargazing viewpoint and camping ground. This spot allows viewing all four groups of stars on the ground. The Phu Thap Boek summit is about 1,768 meters high, offering beautiful views and star gazing all night. Facilities include restrooms for tourists. Around Ban Thap Boek village, there are parking lots, restrooms, restaurants, camping sites, and accommodations for tourists.
