This is my first time rappelling down a waterfall, says Mr.Hotsia.
This waterfall is Wang Tum Waterfall, located at Ban Dong Long, Khaem Son Subdistrict, Khao Kho District. It is within Khao Kho National Park and is about 40 meters high. The team I went with included Nu Bang Bo, an expert who has done this many times, and P' Natee, a master and the site setup expert who also manages Phu Kaeo Adventure Park and Phu Kaeo Resort. This gave me confidence, and besides, I had no other choice since I didn't do tower jumping the day before.
Today, I had to rappel down the waterfall. The rope used for rappelling from the cliff can support more than our weight, so no worries. I've seen in movies where ropes get cut by rubbing against rocks, but the guide even brought a rubber tube to protect the rope. My last concern was what if I lose grip? No problem, the person below pulls the rope and I would hang there. Once all doubts were gone, I was confident. While rappelling, I had one camera hanging on my back and two friends filming from below with two cameras.
The most thrilling moment was leaning back for the first time. It felt like falling off a cliff. After leaning back fully and taking the first step, the rest was pure fun and excitement. For the 40-meter rappel, I recommend wearing hiking shoes. Don't worry about them getting wet because it's worth it to protect your feet from sharp rocks. Also, the shoes are designed to dry quickly and are water-resistant. I left my shoes in the shade overnight and they dried completely.
Near the waterfall, there is a natural rock slide area. After rappelling, you can continue playing there. Rappelling from Wang Tum Waterfall cliff is operated by Khao Kho Explorer group in collaboration with Ban Dong Long Nature Conservation Community.
