Muang On Cave: A journey experience to the world's only natural relic cave in Chiang Mai

When talking about historical and spiritual tourist attractions in Chiang Mai, I, mr.hotsia, would like to share my personal journey experience atMuang On CaveMae On District, Chiang Mai Province. This is not just an ordinary cave but is filled with legends and deep Buddhist meanings that many may not know or have only heard by name.

Mae On was once an ancient town full of stories. Although now it is just Mae On District since 1994, the locals are still proud and regret that the name “Muang On” was not used as the district name. This is because the story of this cave continues to be told about its ancientness and sacredness ofPhra That Nom Phawhich is a unique natural relic in the world. According to legend, the Buddha passed this way thousands of years ago and received wild honey from the Naga residing in the cave as an offering.

Impressions from the hike to Muang On Cave

The journey to Muang On Cave is not very difficult but is full of feelings that must be experienced personally. I, mr.hotsia, started by talking with Mae On locals who shared detailed legends and faith about this place. The atmosphere around the cave remains naturally peaceful, perfect for hiking up to pay respects to Phra That Nom Pha. The highlight of this cave is the large stone pillar called “Phra That Nom Pha,” shaped like a sitting breast, naturally formed without human carving.

Before entering the cave, you will see a long historical sign often overlooked by tourists. I will summarize briefly that the Naga gave the Buddha’s relic hair to be enshrined in this cave for worship. Phra Kru Ba Sri Wichai, a Lanna saint, discovered the cave and renamed it from “Doi Sila Cave” to “Muang On Cave,” and also built stairs to the cave entrance for easier access to worship the relic.

Route and surrounding atmosphere

Along the way up the cave, I encountered nature that still preserves the richness of the forest and mountains. Some locals farm fruit orchards and collect wild honey simply. The path is not very steep, suitable for those who enjoy a relaxed hike, but I recommend bringing water and proper shoes because the weather can be hot at times and the cave floor slippery due to moisture.

If you enjoy learning about local community lifestyles and culture, I suggest stopping to chat with Mae On villagers. They often share stories about the cave and local history in a friendly way, helping you understand the spiritual and religious significance of the people here better.

Phra That Nom Pha: A unique spiritual center

Upon entering the cave, the first striking sight is the large stone pillar called “Phra That Nom Pha.” Its uniqueness lies in being naturally formed, not man-made, a strange and beautiful natural creation. Legend says the Naga placed this relic for people to worship. This is a very rare natural relic, and I, mr.hotsia, must say that seeing and experiencing it firsthand creates a strong connection and respect for the faith of the local people.

Besides Phra That Nom Pha, inside the cave is the “Thanjai” Buddha statue built by Phra Kru Ba Sri Wichai, completed in one day for Buddhists to worship. This is another spot I recommend visiting because the meaning and history of this statue are deeply connected with Lanna faith.

Connecting the journey with nearby attractions

After experiencing the atmosphere and history of Muang On Cave, I recommend planning a trip linking other Chiang Mai attractions such as visitingDoi Tao Lakewhich offers seasonal changing views and nature, or heading toOb Luangto walk across the valley and Mae Chaem River bridge, and also stop to pay respects atWat Phra Borom That Doi Koenganother high viewpoint in Chiang Mai not to be missed.

Visiting Muang On Cave and these nearby places will allow you to deeply experience Northern Thai lifestyle, history, arts, culture, and beautiful nature. I, mr.hotsia, am confident this trip will fill your memories and impressions for everyone who visits.
