Doi Ang Khang Roti: Hot flavors amidst the cold breeze on the high mountain

When it comes to one of the street foods I, mr.hotsia, love and must stop to eat every time I visitDoi Ang KhangChiang Mai province, it has to be the large hot roti served with the sweet aroma of egg and banana, which instantly warms the cold mountain air.

At Doi Ang Khang, where the weather is cool all year round, this small Islamic roti shop has become a must-stop for tourists and locals like me, mr.hotsia, without a doubt. The owner, originally from Yunnan, makes roti by hand, day and night, with great dedication. I watched the large roti sheets being rolled and fried until crispy on the outside and soft inside from early afternoon right in front of the shop. It looked so delicious and mouthwatering that I couldn't resist.

What makes the roti here stand out is the attention to ingredients and the simple yet impressive presentation. The large roti with a big fragrant egg, drizzled with a touch of sweet sugar, is a popular menu item. But for me, mr.hotsia, I like to order it with added banana because it enhances the sweetness and smoothness perfectly. The roti is cut into bite-sized pieces and eaten with hot tea or black coffee from the nearby Dok Mei shop, turning this small nighttime meal on the mountain into a memorable experience I never want to forget.

This shop opens from evening until late at night. People often queue up until the front of the shop is crowded on some nights. I myself have had to wait patiently because this place is well-known not only to me but also to locals and tourists who love Islamic food. Doi Ang Khang Roti is like a warm embrace that this mountain offers.

There are also steamed buns and mantou sold next door, which is the same shop but managed by the owner's daughter while the mother cooks inside. These are lighter options for those who want to try something not too heavy. I, mr.hotsia, recommend trying them along with the roti for a variety of flavors.

Why Doi Ang Khang? Why roti here?

Doi Ang Khang is not only known for its beautiful nature and cool weather but also for the charm of local life and interesting local food. The roti here blends Yunnan and Islamic cultures into a unique flavor. I, mr.hotsia, feel that the roti here is not just food but a story told through its making and eating.

Getting to Doi Ang Khang is not difficult. If you have visited Mae Kampong village or stopped byOb Luangbefore, you will find that visiting Doi Ang Khang is like entering a simple yet warmly welcoming nature and culture.

Connected with diverse Chiang Mai trips

If you have more time, I, mr.hotsia, recommend visiting other places in Chiang Mai that I have shared before, such asDoi Tao Lake Ruinsfull of history and nature transformed by flooding. Or if you enjoy temple atmospheres, don't forget to visitSan Thong Omkoi Templewhich houses the sacred Phra Chao San Thong revered by locals.

And if you want to try Northern Thai food and local coffee before heading up to Doi Ang Khang, Jaeng Muang restaurant in Mae Chaem is another favorite stop of mine, mr.hotsia, because the atmosphere and delicious menu help recharge energy for the long journey.
